Chapter 63: 63. Good Skills

"You have great skills, brothers. You managed to bring down such a big beast." The shopkeeper’s eyes flashed with admiration, then he looked at the assistant beside him and signaled for him to open the side door.

Next up was the weighing.

The assistant who first opened the door quickly went to the back kitchen to call out another assistant to prepare for the move.

Then... with his face turning red from exertion, he only managed to move it a little bit. Several assistants dared not look at the shopkeeper’s face, feeling embarrassed.

"Let’s do it together," Hua Chengtian stepped forward.

Hua Qiang and Meng Cai would never let Hua Chengtian make a move since he was injured. "No need, with the two of us, it’s enough," they said in unison, while Hua Jin silently put down her raised foot.

Four people should be enough to carry a large wild boar, and if not, there are more assistants in the hall.

Even the shopkeeper quickly chimed in, "Yes, yes, you’re injured, you shouldn’t move."

"Thank you, brothers," Hua Chengtian didn’t insist.

Despite this, it still took the four of them a lot of effort to move the wild boar from the ox cart onto the scale.

The number four hundred seventy-three was quite astonishing. When the assistant reported this number, almost everyone was taken aback.

Shopkeeper Wang looked at Hua Chengtian with even more esteem, believing him to be a capable man. With the intention of forming a connection, he offered a very fair price, even pricier than domestic pigs by a wen.

Normally, it would be cheaper since it was a hairy wild boar with its entrails intact.

"A total of seven taels, five qian, and seventy wen. Brother Hua, please take them," smiled Shopkeeper Wang as he handed over the money to Hua Chengtian.

"Thank you, Shopkeeper Wang," Hua Chengtian politely accepted the silver coin.

"No need to be polite. If you have more in the future, bring them to me. I can handle however many you have," Shopkeeper Wang laughed.

"Definitely," Hua Chengtian replied with a smile, "I won’t delay you any longer, shopkeeper."

This was the busiest time for the restaurant, and Hua Chengtian was courteous enough to recognize it.

The shopkeeper was indeed quite busy. If it weren’t for hearing that it was a wild boar, he wouldn’t have had the time to come over. Hearing this, he immediately said, "Alright, alright, I won’t see you off then, brother."

Though he said this, his eyes turned towards the assistant nearby.

Then they all followed the assistant out the side door, rode the cart straight to the medical clinic.

...

"Doctor, is my husband alright?"

Here, the old doctor had just moved his hand away from the pulse when Madam Qi couldn’t hold back her question.

The old doctor had seen many family members like this and didn’t show any displeasure, responding slowly, "Don’t worry, let’s take a look at your husband’s injuries first."

"Alright," Madam Qi nodded hurriedly, knowing she was anxious, but just couldn’t help it.

"Come with me," the old doctor looked at Hua Chengtian as he stood up.

Waving away Hua Qiang and the others’ intent to assist, Hua Chengtian followed the old doctor into the inner room, carrying the bundle handed over by a child’s mother.

Hua Jin instinctively wanted to follow but was pulled back by her mother, "Your father’s having his injuries examined, you shouldn’t go in."

With so much blood lost, the wounds must be gruesome, and Madam Qi was afraid it would scare her daughter.

Seeing the concern on her mother’s face, Hua Jin paused, realizing she had forgotten to tell her mother that she was the one who had bandaged her father’s wounds.

However, with the doctor examining the wounds, it was indeed inappropriate for a girl like her to go in.

The old doctor was swift; not letting everyone wait too long, the two of them emerged from the inner room, with Hua Chengtian having changed out of his bloodstained clothes.

"Doctor, how is my husband?" Madam Qi’s face was full of concern, but this time she restrained herself a bit, only speaking when the doctor had seated.

"Aside from some slight internal injuries, there are no major issues. The wounds have been well treated and will heal on their own in a few days."

"Internal injuries? Are they serious?" Upon hearing ’internal injuries,’ Madam Qi grew anxious. Though just a housewife, she understood that serious internal injuries could be fatal. She couldn’t hold back and asked hurriedly.

Only when her husband secretly squeezed her hand did she slightly relax, though her face remained tense.

Hua Jin was equally worried, thinking that the injuries must have been sustained while dodging the wild mountain boar.

"Don’t worry, it’s not serious. After taking the medicine prescribed by me for a course, it’ll be almost healed," the old doctor patted his gray goatee, speaking unhurriedly.

Upon hearing this, the mother and daughter both breathed a sigh of relief.

As long as it’s not serious.

"Doctor, please prescribe the medicine," Madam Qi finally could ease her tense nerves.

Without speaking, the old doctor picked up the paper and ink nearby, wrote the prescription, and handed it to his apprentice, who quickly gathered five doses of medicine.

The cost was quite high, because medicine for healing internal injuries requires some precious herbs. The silver from selling the wild boar hadn’t even warmed up before two taels and five qian were spent again.

No wonder people say poor folks can’t afford to get sick, for they have no money for treatment.

Even when sick, most people choose to tough it out, unwilling to visit a clinic for medicine unless absolutely necessary.

Seeing the amount of money spent, Hua Qiang and Meng Cai both felt distressed. Two taels or more is something they couldn’t earn in a year of short-term labor.

"Dad, fortunately, you saw the doctor," Hua Jin couldn’t help expressing her relief as they stepped out of the clinic.

"Exactly, your dad always likes to tough things out." Now reassured that nothing serious was wrong with her husband, Madam Qi also relaxed, casting a reproachful look at Hua Chengtian.

Faced with the mother and daughter he couldn’t afford to offend, Hua Chengtian could only sheepishly rub his nose and smile apologetically.

Ignoring her husband and worried about their daughter going hungry at noon, Madam Qi softly asked, "Are you hungry, daughter?"

Hua Jin nodded quickly.

How could she not be hungry? She’d been busy all morning and had faced off with a wild boar. If her mother hadn’t mentioned it, it would’ve been fine, but as soon as she did, Hua Jin’s stomach rumbled loudly, immediately drawing everyone’s attention. Embarrassed, Hua Jin almost wished she could dig a hole and disappear into it.

Realizing his daughter was hungry, Hua Chengtian didn’t think of going back, seeing a restaurant not far from the clinic and calling for his wife and daughter, along with Hua Qiang and Meng Cai, to head over with the ox cart.

"If you brothers aren’t in a hurry, how about joining us for lunch since our niece is hungry?" Hua Chengtian asked.

Both men’s eyes lit up upon hearing this. There’s nothing to rush about, of course, they nodded.

"Even in a hurry, we can’t let our niece go hungry. Brother Chengtian, it’s fine, we brothers aren’t in a hurry to head back."

In these times, who would be extravagant enough to dine out without some family wealth? Only a fool would pass up such an opportunity to broaden their horizons, especially since Brother Chengtian wasn’t an outsider.

Hua Jin also became interested.

Since coming to this world, she’d been to town many times, but this was her first time dining out, making her quite excited.

After arranging the ox cart and ensuring the assistant placed water and grass properly, Hua Jin eagerly pulled her parents into the restaurant.

Once inside, they were warmly ushered to a seat by an assistant, who served them tea.

Hua Chengtian had always been a frugal and capable person, not related to stinginess when it came to going into the Great Western Mountain. Timing matters, and since Hua Qiang and Meng Cai had been busy all over for him, he was naturally generous.

He immediately ordered a serving of braised pork, as rural families tend to favor dishes rich in fat, and then there was sweet and sour ribs for his daughter, a braised fish, a vegetable dish, a plate of braised meat dishes, a plate of buns, and a soup, along with two liang of wine for the two of them. Before they could react to the amount and try to stop, Hua Chengtian had already finished ordering.

"This is too much, Brother Chengtian. We’re all family, why order so much food, not being thrifty?" Hua Qiang said hastily, while Meng Cai tried to stop the assistant from serving two of the meat dishes.
