Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Pei Yu, I want to see you.

Shen Zhiyi found that Xiaodong, who was driving, had been taking detours and finally drove into a hotel outside the film studio base, feeling utterly puzzled.

“Did we change hotels?”

Xiaodong was worried about how to deceive her into entering, so she quickly responded, “Yes, yes, the director changed our hotel.”

Filming was exhausting, and her thoughts were still immersed in the script, so Shen Zhiyi did not suspect Xiaodong’s words and followed her in.

Since it was Qixi Festival, there were many people holding engagement ceremonies or weddings in the hotel. As soon as she entered the lobby, she saw several wedding welcome boards. When the elevator stopped on the twenty-fourth floor, the elaborately decorated lobby made Shen Zhiyi think she had accidentally wandered into someone else’s banquet scene.

“Did we go to the wrong place?”

Xiaodong was also taken aback, then checked the message Wang Feifei had sent her, confirming it was the right floor, “It should be right…”

Just then, the scriptwriter came over, and together with Xiaodong, they tricked Shen Zhiyi into entering, although she felt quite uneasy at the time, she had no idea it was related to her, and was pulled in by the two of them.

The room was dark, but the Crystal Castle’s inherent lighting effects were bright and dreamlike. Shen Zhiyi glanced at it without understanding before her surroundings already resonated with the chorus of “Happy Birthday.”

As the lights suddenly brightened, Shen Zhiyi saw familiar crew members, juniors who had worked with her talent agency, and even several seniors she had worked with before. She stood at the doorway of the room, stunned, as more and more people approached her from three directions, surrounded by the collective birthday song and the sweet scent of the cake engulfing her.

Only then did she sluggishly realize that this was a birthday surprise prepared for her.

Xiaodong approached holding a large bouquet of Unison roses, their bright yellow petals captivating, “Happy birthday, Sister Zhiyi!”

She stuck out her tongue, “Although it’s not midnight yet, we just couldn’t wait.”

“…Thank you,” Shen Zhiyi spoke and then realized her throat was dry. This time, she had her first real birthday surprise. Last year, she didn’t even celebrate her birthday because everyone, including herself, forgot.

The others laughed and jostled her into the room. The film crew’s photographer followed her with a camera, capturing everything from the walls full of Unison roses to Shen Zhiyi, surrounded by people in front of the Crystal Castle. Xiaodong saw her slightly red eyes and felt a peculiar feeling in her heart.

“Were you moved to tears by us?”

Shen Zhiyi nodded, her eyes curving into a smile, her expression tender, “Thank you all.”

“Quick, cut the cake, we’re really starving!”

“Make a wish! Don’t forget to make a wish!”

The candlelight gently flickered. In the past twenty or so years, she had never genuinely made a birthday wish because she never knew what she desired. A thriving career? A fulfilling love life? She felt these were things one couldn’t just ask for.

Now, she closed her eyes, with her only wish being that she hoped her next birthday could be just like today, surrounded by many people.

Dishes were promptly served one after another, and the sound of chatting and laughing filled the air. Shen Zhiyi found time to open her gifts, discovering that the cards on the gifts stacked at the bottom were either marked with “Qin” or “Fu.”

Qin Fang and Fu Songzhi?

At Qin Corporation Headquarters, Qin Fang hung up the phone and went to tease Fu Songzhi, “…Everything’s arranged. The roses were air-shipped from Japan, and the tiara even used my sister’s collectibles. Brother Pei suddenly tasked me with this, which startled me; thankfully, it’s our own hotel, making arrangements easier.”

Fu Songzhi: “Have the gifts also been sent over?”

“Sent them. I asked the assistant to pick twenty items and added your share too. Do we need to show up?”

Since Brother Pei cares so much about Shen Zhiyi, they as brothers, shouldn’t be indifferent.

“Show up?” Fu Songzhi scoffed, “And scare her again, then if rumors spread, see if Brother Pei doesn’t beat you up.”

Qin Fang awkwardly asked, “Then should we send a blessing message?”

No experience, really didn’t know how to handle a good buddy’s girlfriend’s birthday party.

“Just send it,” Fu Songzhi glanced at the time, “Brother Pei can’t make it back?”

“Otherwise, if Brother Pei could make it back, would I even be needed?”

In the hotel, Shen Zhiyi had only opened half of her gifts when she received congratulatory texts from Qin Fang and Fu Songzhi and responded to each.

At the stroke of midnight, her phone vibrated several times with messages from Huo Heng, sent from his assistant’s phone.

Before she could check them, Xiaodong suddenly exclaimed, “Sister Zhiyi, come quickly and see!”

The crowd that had been sitting and laughing together all gathered at the floor-to-ceiling window. Shen Zhiyi was called over, and through the clear glass, she saw a spectacular night view outside.

The height of the hotel was enough to capture the entire city’s night scene; at midnight, the bells of the central building rang. In an instant, the scenes on many buildings and plaza screens changed. Shen Zhiyi tilted her head slightly and saw her face in those screens—her recorded advertisements, magazine photos, clips of the roles she had played, and her fans’ public birthday support videos. The dazzling lights merged into a ribbon cutting through the night’s darkness.

In that moment, this city belonged to her, Shen Zhiyi.

Stunned, Shen Zhiyi kept looking, unable to snap back to reality even as her phone rang; she answered the call unconsciously, and the first sound she heard was the whooshing of wind.

“…Happy Birthday, Zhizhi.”

Pei Yu’s voice, mixed with the sound of the wind, sounded softer than usual.

Shen Zhiyi suddenly asked, “Was it you?”

The unusually extravagant birthday banquet, the advertisements across dozens of buildings and plazas—was it him?

“Hmm?”

Pei Yu looked into the distance. Her endorsed perfume advert was playing on the giant screens. He lowered his gaze and smiled, “Aren’t you happy with it?”

Not wanting to disappoint anyone, he always worried that it still wasn’t good enough.

“No,” Shen Zhiyi quickly denied, somehow sensing a premonition; her heart beat faster—she passed by the people standing around the floor-to-ceiling window and started to walk out, her steps growing bigger until she almost broke into a jog.

Her voice was tense, “Are you here?”

“Pei Yu,” she stuttered, repeated the question, “Are you here?”

She ran out of the room, around the corridor, until she stood in front of the elevator. Seeing the unchanging numbers, Shen Zhiyi revealed a look of bewilderment, her tone dropping, “…not here?”

“Do you want me to appear?”

Imagining her current appearance, Pei Yu laughed softly, tempting her by asking, “Do you want to see me?”

Shen Zhiyi did not respond directly, but murmured in disappointment, “I forgot you were still overseas.”

How could he possibly appear here?

“Zhizhi,” Pei Yu called her, extremely patient, “Say that you want to see me.”

“…I,” she paused, finally listening to her heart at that moment, “I want to see you.”

“Pei Yu, I want to see you.”
