Extreme Pampering-Chapter 46 - Yes I like you
Chapter 46: Yes, I like you.
Chapter 46: Yes, I like you.
The other end of the line was silent for a moment, and Shen Zhiyi seemed to hear a low, airy chuckle, mingling indistinctly with the whooshing wind.
Immediately after, she heard Pei Yu speak.
“Rooftop.”
While everyone was still marveling at the numerous advertising screens, Shen Zhiyi followed the hotel staff to the rooftop. She stood on the open flat roof, still on the phone.
“I can’t see you.”
Pei Yu said, “Right away.”
In the distance, a bright light appeared in the night sky, and the great roaring sound of helicopter propellers cutting through the air pierced the darkness. A silver-gray helicopter slowly descended onto the hotel’s rooftop, stirring up a misty haze of light and shadow around it.
Amid the roaring, Pei Yu descended from the helicopter, his voice both in the handset and the reality reaching Shen Zhiyi’s ears.
“Didn’t you want to see me? Why are you standing still?”
He walked towards her backed by the dense night and the dazzling city lights, and Shen Zhiyi knew that among those brilliant lights tonight, there were many shadows of hers.
She stood dumbfounded in place as Pei Yu approached her, her heart pounding far louder than the drone of the aircraft.
Seeing her dazed, Pei Yu touched her ears with his cool palm, leaning in as he bent down, “Did you hear what I said?”
As the roaring subsided, Shen Zhiyi slowly blinked, looking up at Pei Yu and heard herself asking, “Weren’t you abroad?”
How coincidental it was that he appeared just when she wanted to see him.
Pei Yu raised an eyebrow, “Playing dumb?”
It was her birthday; how could he not be there?
“No,”
Shen Zhiyi denied. It wasn’t playing dumb; she had finally mustered the courage to seek an answer to confirm the guess in her heart.
She was deeply serious, looking at Pei Yu with focused and quiet eyes. Pei Yu could handle his siblings who opposed him without blinking an eye and face down his father pointing a gun at him without retreating, yet he couldn’t help but be tender-hearted towards Shen Zhiyi.
The wind was strong on the rooftop. He led Shen Zhiyi downstairs, deliberately avoiding her focused gaze, his tone casual as if it were a trivial matter, “Just came back after finishing up.”
In reality, it wasn’t that easy. The project he had planned to follow up on for three days hadn’t ended yet. He had come back by private jet to spend her birthday with her and would leave afterward. Though his presence might not mean much to her, Pei Yu couldn’t bear to miss it again.
He had already been forced to miss out time and again.
“Pei Yu,”
Even though he was standing right beside her, Shen Zhiyi’s heart continued to pound violently. She knew what she was nervous about. Tonight everything was so sudden yet seemed so inevitable, forcing her reason to yield to her emotions. She didn’t want to ponder why she had suddenly become obsessive, blurting out her question.
“You came back for me, didn’t you?”
Pei Yu always gave her the intuition that she was being cared for, making no effort to conceal it. She couldn’t be totally unware; no one is unperceptive when loved. She was no exception.
But their relationship had started too absurdly, off the right track from the beginning. Shen Zhiyi always thought they would eventually part ways, thinking that the relationship needed no emotional investment. That is what she believed, but Pei Yu did not.
The gap between their status and everything else was as wide as a chasm. Despite often being perplexed, Shen Zhiyi dared not venture into thinking about emotions, trying to convince herself that these were just the tricks of a Casanova—but what was Pei Yu really after?
They were already in such a relationship, was it necessary for Pei Yu to resort to tactics with her?
As this reason gradually became untenable, another thought became stronger and more irresistible.
She rarely questioned things this deeply. Pei Yu looked down at her for a while. Shen Zhiyi didn’t flinch. She didn’t realize that her appearance at that moment exposed her inner nervousness. Pei Yu sensed it but didn’t understand what she was nervous about.
He simply admitted it because she asked, so he gave his own answer.
“Mm.”
His fingertips caressed her cheek cooled by the wind as Pei Yu said softly, “I want to spend your birthday with you.”
He wanted to be with her on her birthday, wanted to make her happy, wanted to fill every corner of her life with his traces.
He couldn’t accept being forgotten again.
Entering the brightly-lit room, Shen Zhiyi saw his weary brows and eyes. He had traveled non-stop to make it to her birthday celebration.
It was extremely quiet around them, and Shen Zhiyi’s voice was soft but clear enough to be heard.
“Pei Yu, do you like me?”
A night of passion was but a fleeting illusion, only fools talked of love. Everyone assumed that feelings should not be involved in such relationships, yet that night, Shen Zhiyi was willing to play the fool; she wanted an answer.
She hadn’t expected her to ask such a question; her attitude had always been to maintain a line with emotions, perhaps still apprehensive due to her past with Huo Heng.
Pei Yu was initially startled but quickly smiled.
He keenly perceived the relaxation of her defenses. As a person who took advantage of vulnerabilities, he naturally wouldn’t miss this good opportunity to advance their relationship.
The door of the VIP room beside them was open. Pei Yu led her inside, didn’t turn on the light, and hoisted her onto the vestibule cupboard with his arms propping him on either side of her—an embracing posture.
The lighting was dim, and his face was unclear. Shen Zhiyi instinctively reached for his tie, which Pei Yu didn’t stop her from doing. His gaze was deep as he leveraged this force to come even closer and said in a hoarse voice, “Ask me again.”
The tie in her hands provided enough security in the darkness. Although she couldn’t see him, she could feel his presence at all times. She pursed her lips and repeated, “Do you like me?”
Though it was a question, her tone was almost affirmative.
His current posture of leaning down and the close proximity all conveyed his indulgence.
A low chuckle again, Pei Yu seemed very pleased as he lifted her up, planting delicate kisses along the side of her neck.
His answer was without hesitation, “Yes, I like you, Shen Zhiyi.”
Having her stay at Huating was because of his liking, giving her the “Nightingale” was because of his liking. Perhaps using the word ‘like’ to describe it was far too shallow—what she detected, and what she did not detect, was just a fraction of his immense love.
Fingers entwined in the hair at the back of his head, Shen Zhiyi got her answer but didn’t feel relieved. On the contrary, she felt even more bewildered, “Why me?”
A man like him, seated at the pinnacle of the pyramid; what kind of woman hadn’t he seen? How had one frivolous night led him to like her?
She didn’t feel happy or proud; instead, she felt apprehensive and confused. For Shen Zhiyi at that moment, Pei Yu’s liking felt more like a burden to her.
She didn’t know whether Pei Yu’s feelings were true or superficial, deep or shallow, nor did she know how to reassess their relationship.
Her erected defenses wavered.
