Chapter 28: Who shot him?

The atmosphere was unbearably stifling, and an oppressive silence dominated both the living room and the live broadcast. It was so quiet that one could hear the participants’ breathing and the rapid thumping of their hearts. Everyone’s eyes were locked on the radio device in Lan Qisheng’s hand.

Even Sian, who had been laughing just moments ago, had now fallen silent, his expression turning serious. His current state wasn’t due to fear of the terrorists or the prospect of his own death; rather, it was because he suddenly felt a heavy weight settle in his heart. Sian had always been highly perceptive, capable of sensing impending disaster before it struck. Unfortunately, his instincts and intuition were screaming at him now, boiling with unease. At that moment, Sian knew—something terrible was about to happen.

Honestly, he was furious. He had thought he would be leaving this forest soon, but now, it didn’t seem like things would go so smoothly. Sian wasn’t afraid of facing the danger lurking ahead, but he really didn’t want to deal with it. He wished he didn’t have to fight anymore. Forget physical battles—he didn’t even have the patience for verbal arguments. That was precisely why he had been so relieved when he was expelled from his job as an idol. Who didn’t know how twisted and filthy that industry was?

Besides, he despised fights. He had spent most of his life struggling just to survive. Frankly, he didn’t even know why he had to keep going, yet he dragged his battered body and shattered soul forward regardless. And now, after traveling through time and space, was he really supposed to fight again? Even in a peaceful world like this?

Screw my life.

Sian was so angry that he didn’t even bother suppressing his killing intent. In an instant, his aura exploded in a burst of raw fury. Ordinary people might not be able to sense another person’s aura, but at that moment, everyone who had their eyes on Sian shuddered in fear. Suddenly, the air around them felt ice-cold. Their bones trembled—whether from terror or the chill, no one could tell.

Liang Zhu and Ben Wang assumed that Sian was furious because of their earlier attempt to sacrifice him, and their fear intensified. As for Lan Qisheng and his soldiers, they were more accustomed to such lethal auras, yet they were still stunned by the bloodthirsty energy radiating from Sian.

In the end, Lan Qisheng couldn’t help but speak in a low voice, "Sian, restrain yourself."

The others didn’t understand, but Lan Qisheng’s subordinates knew exactly what their commander meant.

Please—Even they, the elite forces of the military, were drenched in sweat under the suffocating pressure Sian exuded. No wonder the others were trembling in place.

Sian glanced at Lan Qisheng, then closed his eyes, exhaled a long breath, and pushed down his emotions.

[Ah, forget it. I’ll do this just one last time.]

Sian’s expression softened. Then, a voice crackled through the radio device. It was clear and filled with excitement.

"Colonel Lan! All the hostages have been successfully rescued! Everyone is safe, and they are now being escorted by the medical team to the city hospital."

"Thank God," Lan Qisheng muttered, allowing himself a small smile. His soldiers erupted in cheers. As soldiers, their top priority had always been the lives of their country’s citizens. The joy of saving an innocent life was a feeling that never grew old.

The audience was overjoyed as well. The families of the victims wept and rushed to the city hospital to reunite with their loved ones. Some even took the time to leave messages in the live broadcast chat:

"My husband was among the hostages. Thank you all. Thank you, Commander Lan, thank you to the soldiers and the military. My children and I will be forever grateful."

"My brother—My brother was saved! Thank you, thank you! May God protect you all as well!"

"Thank you!"

"Well, at least there’s some good news amidst all this chaos," Sian remarked with a faint smile.

Honestly, some might think that witnessing countless deaths would harden a person’s heart, making them indifferent to life and death. But the truth was quite the opposite. When someone had seen their loved ones, their friends, and so many innocent lives lost, they became more sensitive to the value of life.

Even if Sian didn’t particularly cherish his own life, he had always believed that everyone had the right to live. He tried to save as many people as he could—not out of duty, not out of love, but simply because he couldn’t bear to witness death, especially meaningless deaths.

Everyone was relieved now, and the remaining people with Sian were waiting for their turn to leave the forest. Their thoughts were simple—if others had made it out safely, they would too.

Then, Liam’s annoying voice finally rang out, breaking the tense silence. fгeewebnovёl.com

"So? I’m a man of my word, aren’t I? I’ve released everyone I held. Now it’s your turn. My men will be there soon. I want every single one of you inside that house to come out slowly. As we agreed, I’ll take you and your soldiers with me and let the rest return home."

"Understood," Lan Qisheng replied with just a single word.

"Sir... are we really going to comply with their demands?" Zhao Ling couldn’t help but ask.

"We have no other choice."

After saying that, he exchanged a few meaningful glances with his soldiers. They all nodded in unison as if receiving an unspoken command. Their questions and objections vanished instantly.

A couple of minutes later, Liam contacted them again, instructing them to come out—his team was waiting.

"They said to come out with your hands in the air. Don’t try anything funny, or there will be no mercy," a voice shouted from outside—a blatant threat.

Lan Qisheng paid them no attention. Instead, he walked over to the unfortunate captive who had been forgotten ever since Sian stabbed him with a dagger.

Honestly, Sian had been merciful. He had made sure to stab the man in the flesh, avoiding any major nerves or bones. He never intended for the terrorists to bleed out and die—he just wanted to terrify them.

Because of that, the captive wasn’t in any critical condition. He still had enough strength to glare at Sian and the others with seething hatred, grinding his teeth as if he wanted to tear them apart and devour them alive.

Lan Qisheng grabbed the captive by the arm and ordered everyone to line up and head out. His team was divided—half left first, followed by the remaining participants. Finally, he was the last to exit, dragging the captive along.

Outside, the enemy men were armed to the teeth, their rifles aimed directly at the door. One by one, Sian and the others stepped out, their hands raised in a gesture of surrender.

Once they were all out, they stood in a line. Including the captive, there were eighteen of them in total.

Wait, were there always this many?

Let’s see—Sian, Lan Qisheng, and his five soldiers. That made seven. Then there were seven other participants, making fourteen. And those three reclusive individuals...

Seventeen, not counting the captive.

One of the enemy men stepped forward and addressed Lan Qisheng. It was the same voice that had ordered them out earlier.

"What are you playing at, soldier?"

It was clear he was speaking to Lan Qisheng, who was holding the captive in one hand while calmly pressing a dagger against his throat.

"I’m not playing at anything. I’m simply making sure you honor your word. Now, let the ten people with me leave this forest safely. That was our agreement, after all," Lan Qisheng stated, his gaze sharp and unwavering.

The man didn’t seem the least bit nervous, which made Lan Qisheng suspicious.

Then—

"BANG!"

A gunshot rang out.

And before everyone’s stunned eyes, Lan Qisheng, who had been gripping the captive moments ago, suddenly let go. Blood dripped from his hand.

It had all happened in the blink of an eye.

Who shot him?
