Chapter 34: The Four Types of Horrors

『Of course, Master. The first type of Superficial is called Bestia’s』

"Bestia’s?"

Adam said with a confused look in his eyes as he clenched his fist, his entire body still shaking from the pain. Blood dripped from his mangled hand, but he forced himself to focus. He needed to understand what he had just fought.

『Yes Bestias!! You see there are four distinct types of Superficial, and these are one of the types, and each type is categorized not by raw strength, but by its nature, how it exists, how these monsters interact with the world, and how they defy, conventional logic itself』

"I see... can you explain them in further detail to me... I really need to know what the heck I am dealing with here."

Naturally, the System responded as she said.

『Understandable master, well according to my archived database... Bestia are by far the most common Superficial you will find here. These are the most physical of the Superficials. Creatures that follow the natural order of predators and prey, though twisted beyond reason. They rely on biological advantages, brute force, and instinct to hunt and survive. Think of them as nightmarish monsters given flesh, but still bound by material limitations. A pack of monstrous wolves, a goliath centipede with armor like a fortress, things that can be fought with traditional means』

Said the System.

To which Adam nodded his head, and replied.

"I see... so they are basically the Monster world equivalent of a cliche isekai, orcs, goblins, kobolds, and so on, yikes."

『Pretty much yeah』

Adam just nods his head... and beyond that, he thinks further on it.

After all the System explanation for these types made a lot of sense.

Still thinking about that goddamn bird, the Aderyn if he is not mentally butchering its name, however, to him at least, didn’t seem like a Superficial that would fall into that category. It didn’t use its body to attack at all, those screams were too exoteric in nature if you ask him.

And the System hearing her master’s thoughts answered back, saying.

『That’s because they don’t fall under that category, they are of a species that fall under the second type of Superficials that exist』

She said, causing Adam to reply.

"I figured, Christ... sigh... care to explain the second types, it would help knowing how to avoid these types more, I am pretty injured here, and I need to eat something to trigger my healing... or I might really bleed to death... or maybe...

Adam said, thinking back to his time in the Codex.

"Yeah, it would be a good time, to test that out."

Right after, the System went on explaining the second type, and what Adam heard surprised him.

『Well moving on to the second type, also known as Ethereal’s, these beings are quite the problem to deal with. These are Superficials that carry weird powers, that are usually special or weird in some way. The point is, that they are highly supernatural, they operate by bending reality in ways that feel unnatural but are still somewhat understandable. A monster whose shadow eats light, a creature that can only be harmed if you know its true name, a predator that exists in mirrors but not in the real world...you see where I am going with this』

"Hmmm... that quite the problem to deal with, but I did defeat one, although that was only because I acted quickly, I won’t get ahead of myself here, but at least I know they can still be dealt with, however, I should still keep my guard up, I almost die because of one of these things."

Adam declared.

And the System moves on.

『It would be the smart thing to do master, it is the last two types you should be worrying about though. Those are the most dangerous types of Superficial since their nature makes them a pain to deal with, if not outright impossible to beat under normal circumstances, hell I am not even sure you can beat those types if you are unlucky enough to run into one... all I can suggest would be to run away』

"You make it sound like a lost cause."

『Because it is』

"Ooof... sigh... well no pain no gain, but I will take your advice...if we or rather I am unlucky enough to run into any type 3’s and 4’s...then I will run away, I can’t make a harem if I am dead, call me a coward if you want... Beatrice already made it clear, I can’t enter Kalpana World if I don’t complete my story as a Harem MC."

Said Adam, right after the System spoke once more replying.

『Because it is』

She said, then continued.

『Now for the third type... Immateria』

’Hmm... let’s see why they are so dangerous.’

Adam said to himself, as the system continued.

『These Superficials aren’t born in the usual sense. Instead, they form in places where miasma is present, but at the same time deep-rooted negativity as well. These Superficials can be seen as cursed lands that are living, where suffering, betrayal, or death have repeated for years, over, and over, again, and again, and all that negativity gathers into a single point to form this specific type of Superficial』

"...Jesus, that is kind of messed up, not going to lie."

『Because it is master... but I am not finished, just hear me out and you will see what I mean, about the last two types of Superficial being too dangerous for you to tackle head-on, you see if you meet one of these things... killing them is close to impossible』

『And before you ask, it is because of their nature of existing, to make a long story short, over time, the lingering negativity in the area takes shape, becoming a monstrous being of great power dub as a Walker. not only are these Walkers nearly immortal, but they can leave their birthplace, anytime they want, but killing them is near impossible because their true form is the place itself』

『Meaning the land where all that darkness first took root. No matter how far it wanders, it will always be tied to that origin. Killing its body won’t destroy it, so it is not a permanent solution, because it will simply reform over time』

『The only way to truly end an Immateria is to purge or destroy the cursed place where the walker was born, to begin with, but stepping foot inside their domain is a literal death wish because, inside it is a place of power for that Superficial, and to make things, worst, they usually keep large numbers of other type of Superficial inside their birthplace to keep guard, as they can control other lesser Superficials』

『But places aside, when it comes to overall power they have... it is hard to say, since the power they get embodies the pain and suffering of the place they were born in, so the Walker develop power in relation to that place’s history』

"That is indeed a lot to take in, so not only can I get murdered in the sky, but also on the ground...

Adam said in a panic.

And if things could not get even worse.

The System explains what the last type of Superficials are.

『Dont get too comfortable, the last type is easily the most dangerous』

"Great.... just great... hehehe.... oh well it is what it is, just give it to me straight"

And that was exactly what she did.

『The last type of Superficial is called Unknown. These are strange, like the third type, but instead of having abilities tied to a place of negativity, they are found only in labyrinths. Labyrinths are mysterious places filled with Miasma, considered the birthplace of new Superficials』

『Each floor of a labyrinth is like a separate finite-size reality, housing different types of Superficials. They are a Superficial incubator of sorts』

『Labyrinths are dangerous because they can have thousands of floors, and the only way to get rid of them is by destroying the labyrinth’s core, which contains an indefinite amount of Miasma or rather it acts as a bridge between the labyrinth and a place called the Malform world, a place said to have infinite Miasma. As the Labyrinth uses that core to draw power from the Malform world to create more Superficials, the Labyrinth itself is alive which is why it can create other Superficials, so you need to destroy the core, to deal with it, but you see why they are the most dangerous types out of the four that exist』
