Chapter 89: Conclusion To The Night II

"Holy crap... I mean, yeah, I know vampires can be B to S-Rank depending on their evolution, but... seriously...

Adam muttered, eyes wide as the aftermath of Clara’s Shadow Prison cleared the tunnel of all life.

"That’s not a general skill... That’s a damn cheat code. Who the hell designed this race? Dracula on steroids?"

He took a breath, the hum of Clara’s residual corruption still thick in the air, but Clara didn’t respond right away.

Instead, her crimson eyes narrowed, the remnants of her blood manipulation slowly retracting into her skin like living tendrils.

"Mon m-m-maître...

She called softly, but there was a tension in her voice that made Adam’s ears perk up.

"Hmm, what is Clara?"

Adam asked as he looked at his servant. For some reason, her form was trembling, and she soon began to speak.

"Up ahead... I sense something."

And the moment heard that, a serious look came on his face, as he looked up ahead, but he saw nothing in particular.

"...Something ha?"

"I cannot explain it."

Clara murmured, turning toward the tunnel ahead. Her fangs unconsciously bared slightly.

"But I do not wish to proceed. It feels as though my body is telling me that if I move one step further, I will die."

That made Adam freeze. Clara wasn’t one to throw around fear lightly if she herself couldn’t access emotions properly.

As such, he closed his eyes, trusting his sense of trust in this moment.

Stillness naturally came.

His breathing slowed as he tuned into the vibrations of the world around him. He could feel slight movement up ahead, but he could also sense the flow of Astrum, space, and time, Astrum to be precise.

And that’s when he felt it.

A sudden movement, it went unnoticed at first, given how still the thing in question was, it hung upside down on the cavern’s stone ceiling.

The movement itself came roughly a hundred meters ahead, as the figure took guard before a glowing portal, which was that of a man.

Adam’s eyes snapped open.

"He could feel how strong this enemy was...it was definitely levels beyond the asshole dangling on his waist."

The man was powerful. Adam could feel it in his bones. His corruption was denser than Clara’s, older, and refined as well.

But before either of them could even make a move, that was when it happened.

"How boring."

The man’s voice rang out clear as day, despite the distance, as if he were whispering directly into their ears, despite being so far.

Adam flared up, as his body told him to dodge, the Blood of Allash ever so sensitive to danger, yet he was too slow to react, his mind ahead of his body.

And before he knew.

A flash of deep red overwhelmed them from all sides.

FLASH!!

"Shit!...

Adam shouted out in annoyed vigor, and when he looked around, they were no longer in the same place as before.

However, the two soon figured out where exactly they had ended up.

As the familar voice echoed around them once more.

"So, you’re the vampire the lady foresaw coming here... Honestly, you don’t look like much. Why she’s so concerned is beyond me."

The man standing upon the ceiling said, as he dropped down right before the portal, clearly acting as its guard.

"Sigh... I’ll never understand Yarquela or her reasons, but she has never been wrong yet. All I have to do is follow orders...and kill you both."

He mused as he began to walk towards the duo.

"Still, I have to admit... I’m disappointed. What could a low-class peasant and some brat possibly hope to accomplish here?"

The nameless man wondered as he strode forward.

But in the end, his mind was already made up.

"No matter. The sooner you die, the smoother the ritual will go... it has already started either way, we can’t stop now."

Looking at the figure before them, Clara, being protective of her master, steps forward with her blade ready to strike, as she said.

"Get behind me, mon maître."

Clara forced herself forward in Adam’s place; on that note, however, Ada looked at the man from behind with annoyed eyes, yet they were cautious.

’This man, he fits the description Keira gave me.’

A full white cloak draped his figure like a funeral sheet. His face was hidden beneath a black-and-white mask, featureless, save for a single line where the lips might be.

On that note, however, the man’s gaze fell on Clara as he said.

"Fine, I will start with the peasant vampire then."

And said, so done because in the next instant, Clara paid dearly for her bravery.

"Shit Clara, do...

Adam shouted, but he didn’t even get to finish. freewebnσvel.cøm

Because in the next instant, the man vanishes.

Clara’s eyes widened in that single heartbeat of realization, in less than a fraction of a second, he was right before his hand in a punching motion a flash of purple coated his fist, as he was about to strike her hard, she would dodge, but it was already too late to move out of the way.

RUMBLE....BOOM!!

A deafening shockwave rocked the cavern.

At this point, Clara only had time to save Adam as he sank down his own Shadow and reappeared near the portal.

Purple lightning crackled from the man’s fist as it collided directly with Clara’s chest, sending her flying backwards, as a massive blast of concentrated energy exploded outwards in a radiant pillar. The sheer force evaporated stone and air alike, everything in its path turned to light and then to nothing.

"GaaaaaaaAAAHHHHH!!"

Clara screamed, her voice high, pained, and fading fast.

Her body, or what remained of it, began to disintegrate. Her arms and legs were gone, vanishing in glowing ash. Her midsection was evaporating into white mist.

But then...right before Clara’s death.

"Not today, you bastard."

Adam’s hand shot out.

Since his feathers were still on Clara, he could cast magic on her; as such, his astrum flowed inwards quickly, and a series of silver magic circles appeared inside her body, as Adam tried to save as much as he could.

The fragments of Clara’s innards, like small pieces of the spine, heart, and a portion of her upper body, were encased in a highly dense air barrier. From there, following the motion of his fingers, he dragged her remains from the purple light.

It flew out of the blast range.

What he collected was no bigger than a snow globe’s worth of fleshy material, as the bloody orb flew towards him.

And he caught her.

Even if barley.

Adam floated backward, cradling her remains in one arm. His face was twisted with a mix of rage and horror.

"I got you, Clara, just focus on healing...

Adam said as he began to extend the barrier to human size, right behind him.

The vampire, on the other hand, tilted his head to face him, his voice calm, yet it had a low echo to it.

"Annoying."

He said as he began to run towards Adam, however, Adam was faster, he had more than enough time to code, more circles into existence.

Adam launched a barrage of wind spears at the masked man, hundreds of invisible rods screaming through the air like snipers.

But to his utter shock...

The man dodged them... and very casually at that.

"What!?"

He said with shock.

As each rod missed by a fraction of an inch, but not from luck. Rather, the masked vampire moved like he could feel the Astrum itself approaching him. His body shifted ahead of every trajectory before they even launched.

"You fool."

He said with disdain.

"Has no one taught you? Noble vampires are sensitive to Astrum itself. I can feel every ripple you make, and react to any magic attack before they even land."

Adam’s jaw clenched.

’...I know Priscilla can do this, but I though that was unique to her as result of being a Shinso vampire, tsk... damn I really need to study more on vampire’s.’

Either way, Adam was determined; as such, he began recoding the construct.

’Fine if quantity won’t work, I will just switch to quality.’

In that moment, a giant silver magic circle that was almost as large as the entire tunnel of the cavern came into being.

And from Adam’s magic circle, a massive spear of compressed air launched forward, so dense and vast it resembled a colossal invisible pillar rather than a weapon. It shot ahead with the force of a speeding battering ram, extending like an ever-growing staff of wind, aimed straight at the cloaked vampire.

By the time it reached its full speed, it had already broken the sound barrier several times over, traveling at Mach 12. The resulting sonic boom was deafening, shaking the cavern violently. The sheer pressure of the blast distorted the air, forcing both Adam and his opponent to flinch.

For Adam, the consequences were immediate and brutal. His sensitive eardrums burst from the shockwave, sending blood trickling down his neck. Pain flared through his skull like firecrackers going off in his brain.

Even the masked vampire, clearly far more powerful, wasn’t entirely unaffected, but his hearing suffered nonetheless, as his ears rang with the impact, a mild irritation at best, but enough to make him narrow his eyes.

Adam’s intent was crystal clear: crush this bastard with an oversized, hyperspeed air construct and end this fight before it could escalate any further.

But then something impossible happened.

The cloaked man moved fast. Ridiculously fast. And in the space around his feet, glowing colorless magic circles were formed, as he began to speak.

"Attributeless Magic: Overwrite."

With those simple words, the world around both him and Adam twisted.

A surge of characterless Astrum surged from him like ripples on still water, warping the surrounding Attributed Astrum. And then, the unimaginable occurred.

Adam’s own magic circle, his creation, turned against him.

The great spear made of air vanished.

No explosion. No impact. Nothing of the sort happened when the effects of his spell took place. The spell’s structure, the very information that made it function, was erased. It wasn’t just canceled... No! It was unwritten from the world, as if it had never existed to begin with.

Adam’s eyes went wide as his own magic circle flickered violently. Its silver glow drained away, turning first to a colorless transparent hue, and then to blinding white.

Heat Magic.

He realized the Astrum type immediately.

His jaw dropped as realization sank in; he had no idea how he did this, but he called it anyway.

"Did he... did he just... hacked my magic circle, you can do that with Astrum?"

But no answer came. Only cruelty.

"Original Magic: Brain Furnace."

The cloaked man said as he began coding a fundamental type spell into existence.

And the moment he cast it, pain hit Adam instantly.

An agony so raw and unnatural that Adam couldn’t even scream. All the warmth in his body vanished in an instant. His limbs went cold, numb, lifeless...like the flesh of a corpse. But that stolen heat didn’t disappear.

Instead, all of his body heat was transferred somewhere else.

As it began to flood his head.

A torrent of thermal energy, forcefully compressed, surged into his skull. His face swelled grotesquely as veins bulged and his skin flushed with an infernal glow. Fire sparked beneath the surface of his skin. It looked like his skull had become a jack-o’-lantern lit from the inside.

But this was no decoration.

Because in this moment his brain was the wick, and his body the bomb.

And then in a brutal display....

BOOOOOOOM!!!

His head exploded in a burst of flame and gore, brain matter spraying the cavern walls, shards of skull flying like shrapnel. The sound echoed like a thunderclap, followed by the soft thud of his now-headless body collapsing to the floor.

"Hmmm... a brat will be a brat... I have lived for hundreds of years, to me, you’re just an oversized bacteria."

"...Now then, your turn."

The man said as he looked at the barrier that was cracking, and from it came Clara.

Her body fully regenerated into a perfect whole, however, she was naked in this moment.

"Mon maître... I am ba...

But Clara’s voice went silent when she saw the brutal scene before her. The sight of Adam’s lifeless body lying on the cold stone floor, his neck area still on fire, as a pool of his blood lay beneath his small corpse.

"Mon... maître."
