Chapter 97: Conclusion To The Night X

Adam held the ball of swirling darkness in his hands, a sphere the size of a basketball, pulsing with layers of ominous colors that didn’t belong in any normal spectrum.

Violet bled into scarlet, scarlet twisted into a rotting green, and it all collapsed into shadow that drank the very light around it. The magic circle beneath him pulsed in tandem with the orb.

He exhaled softly, eyes still locked on the sphere.

"Sigh... Finally."

Adam muttered.

"Took me long enough to beat this guy."

Said Adam, but moments after, he could hear someone behind him, their footsteps quiet.

Clara approached, her arms now fully healed, the bruises and ruptures across her body gone without a trace.

At this moment, she began to move towards Adam as her long black hair flowed in a dark sheen, slightly tousled from battle. Currently, she was naked as her dress had vaporized by the purple lightning that he had unleashed upon her earlier.

Though her face remained as calm and expressionless as ever as she moved closer ot her master.

Although she eyes him down from head to...well, swarm, and swarm back to head.

"Maître... is that truly you?"

She asked, her tone steady, but the way her crimson eyes lingered betrayed her expressionless demeanour.

Adam, still mostly a swarm of black and red serpents coiled together in humanoid form, slowly turned to face her. He could sense her desires, her worry, her fear, her guilt; it wasn’t much, but it was still there.

And the swarm of snakes that formed his lower half twisted, causing him to turn his body to face her, as a warm smile greeted Clara.

"Yeah, Clara...

He said softly, while scratching the back of his head with one hand.

"It’s me... hehehe... I’m sorry I worried you."

Adam said with a carefree expression, as he laughed mid-sentence of his apology.

She blinked once, slowly, and for a moment, it looked as though her mask might fracture. But instead, she exhaled through her nose, her voice quiet as she looked down while putting her hand to her chest as if a great worry had left her.

"...Je suis soulagée."

She said, as she whispered quietly to herself, closing her eyes for a short period in that moment. Right after, she looked back at Adam and said.

"I am glad you’re back mon maître."

"...Hehehe... I am glad to be back; that vegetable or dormant-like state I found myself in is not a nice feeling at all."

Explained Adam, meanwhile, Clara gave him a confused look as if to say... What are you even talking about? However, her attention was soon shifted to somewhere else, as her eyes fell on the orb in Adam’s hand.

Curious, she asked while pointing at it.

"What... is that, exactly?"

Clara asked Adam, who at this moment looked in the direction of her pointing finger, which led to the oro in his hands.

"Hmmm... Oh, this thing?"

Adam asked as he chuckled deviously while looking at it.

Then the serpents composing his lower form slithered and twisted as he began gliding toward her, his entire being contorting and coiling around her like a ribbon. As a result, she could feel snakes crawling around her body, it was like she had joined the swarm.

And the effect of his movements was... unsettling, to say the least. Clara didn’t flinch, of course, but her crimson eyes tracked every movement.

Right after he was closer to Clara, he began to explain himself.

"I made this just now."

He said, meeting her gaze as the swarm of snakes lazily wrapped around her like a dark shawl.

But being this close to Adam, she could not see the orb up close, as Adam began to explain what it was to her.

"It’s magic spell called Dream of the Damned...it’s a type of magic that allows the caster to create what is called a personal afterlife, or my own little piece of hell, as I like to call it."

Clara looked at it, although not much emotion was visible on her face. She was clearly curious about its existence.

"It’s a necromantic spell. Or rather, a form of primordial necromancy for lack of a better word."

Adam added, his voice playful.

"It takes a nightmare I already have and turns it into an immaterial realm... or it’s best described as a dreamworld for souls I can trap inside. And because it’s my own dream... I can control everything within it. Like lucid dreaming, except I, the dreamer, am awake. And the ones trapped inside can’t wake up because, well, they are dead."

Right after he said that... He extended his hand, and the orb shimmered again. Colors twisted and warped, then began to display an image within its swirling depths.

"Here... Look for yourself."

Clara stepped forward slightly, peering into the sphere. Inside, a vision sharpened: a blood-red landscape, dark clouds present, and stretching as far as the eye can see, cracked earth littered with bone and ash. And stumbling through it, desperate, filthy, and afraid, was a man she recognized instantly.

It was none other than the noble vampire, Casimir.

"What is this place?!"

He screamed, his voice echoing as he ran through the field of ruin, only to find a grotesque beast, colossal horrors with writhing limbs and too many eyes, and black fur coating their bodies, each one closing in on him from every side.

Clara narrowed her gaze.

"C’est lui...

She said in French, and weirdly enough, Adam, who does not speak French, but can read her desires and emotions, understood her as clearly as day. Because before the context of desires, all language, no matter how complex, is universally understandable.

As such, he replied to Clara.

"Yup... It’s exactly as you are thinking... but watch this... I can fuck with this asshole from here."

Adam said with a wicked grin as he looked down at the orb and began to speak.

"Welcome to your new home, Casimir."

Inside the orb, Casimir froze with horror as he began to look all around him in confusion.

"Ohhh my, confuse much shit stain."

And there it was again.

"Y-you!!...

He shouted, eyes wide, spinning in place.

"You bastard! Come out a face like a man, and stop with these mind games."

At these words, Adam exhaled dramatically, resting his chin in one hand like a bored aristocrat.

"Mm... You talk too much for a dead man... That’s no way to talk to your personal devil now, is it?"

He said, as his voice could be heard everywhere in this dream realm.

Soon, his tone darkened with a smirk forming on his face as he said.

"Maybe some time in the sun will teach you some much-needed manners."

"Wait Wh...

Casimir didn’t get the chance to finish.

Because right after Adam spoke. Reality inside the orb twisted. The ground tore open and the sky cracked like an egg, giving way to an interstellar void. He screamed as a gravitational pull dragged him upward, toward a star, burning hotter than anything he could possibly imagine.

"No! Wait, WAITTTT!!"

He screamed as he tried to grab onto something but failed.

As he ris closer to the sun, Adam had created in the realm. His spiritual body caught fire, melted, regenerated, and burned again. Again. Again. Screaming endlessly, as he was caught in a loop of eternal agony.

Outside, in the living world, Adam let the orb float calmly between his fingers.

"And that’s pretty much it."

Said Adam.

Meanwhile, Clara didn’t speak... not right away, at least. She merely stared into the orb, watching the torment. Even as an immortal vampire, even as one who had seen kingdoms fall and monsters rise as a human, along with experiencing atrocity herself... the cruelty of it made her shiver.

She then looked up slowly at Adam.

"...Maître."

Clar said softly, grabbing Adam’s attention.

"Yes, Clara?"

However, what he didn’t expect was Clara’s next question.

"Are you certain you are not... a god of some sort?"

Adam barked a short laugh at these words.

"Heaven no... God me... I wish...this is just basic necromancy. Well, primordial necromancy, but still."

He said with a snap of his fingers, and the orb vanished, dissolving into ash and starlight.

Moments after the serpents that formed his lower body began to spiral again, swirling upward around Clara in a vortex. The mass compressed above her, then twisted inward, shifting, shaping, until it formed a humanoid shape suspended in the air.

Revealing a naked Adam.

His body hovered, glowing faintly with residual corruption, his eyes like snakes, golden in color, and sclera black like a void. But before Clara’s eyes could linger more on the boy’s naked form, two massive black wings erupted from his back, then curled around him like a cloak. As they folded in, recreating his usual clothes formed.

However, a good amount of those feathers flew towards Clara and recreated her feathered dress as well.

"MM... Much better... now then...

He commented as he walked towards Cecil’s head, which was just lying there on the ground, annoyed as ever, and put him back on the makeshift holster.

"It’s time we end this invasion."
