Chapter 1149: I am my own enemy

"How did it go?" Joker asked as soon as Hera entered the front passenger’s seat. Seeing her expression, that was enough for him to get his answer. "Well, never mind."

Joker shrugged as he started the engine, ready to drive themselves back to the building where they landed earlier. But just as he started driving, Hera spoke.

"Give me your phone," she said, earning a quick look from him. "I need to call Dominic."

"Uh..." Joker pondered. "Why?"

"Do I have to answer to you now?"

"No, but I don’t think that’s a good idea."

Hera clasped her hand and then massaged her temple. "I know it’s a bad idea to contact him, but I have to."

"Hera." Joker’s expression turned solemn, keeping his eyes on the windshield. "What happened in there?"

Hera didn’t answer as she leaned back against the seat. What happened back there was... awful. It wasn’t like she didn’t expect any bad talk with Old Madam Zhu. After all, she was Hera and not Heaven Liu, whom the Old Madam doted on. However, what she didn’t expect was the information she would learn from her.

"I’m not asking for the details," Joker sighed. "All I’m asking is, do you think it’s necessary to risk it? Is it worth it?"

"My husband needs me." Hera looked at his side profile. "Everything about that is worth it."

"Is he going to die?"

No.

Again, Hera didn’t answer as she looked away. Her fist trembled as her jaw tightened, barely containing the turmoil in her chest. What Old Madam Zhu told her made her angry and she could imagine how Dominic felt. As his wife, she wanted to be there for him and console him, tell him everything was alright, and that what Old Madam Zhu or everyone else wasn’t their fault.

Their elders made their decisions. It might not be the right call and was affecting the living, but her feelings for him would never change. She wanted to let him know there wasn’t anything he should feel guilty about.

"I’m done," Hera whispered through gritted teeth. "I’m done letting them take away every little thing I hold on to."

Joker glanced at her again to see her expression. When he set his eyes back on the road, he took a deep breath and pondered.

"My phone’s right there," he said, tipping his head in the compartment between the driver’s seat and the front passenger seat. "It’s protected like usual, but make sure to keep the call as short as possible. Just give him the time and date. I’ll tell the guys about the plan and we’ll make preparations."

Hera pursed her lips, staring at his side profile. Joker knew any contact with Dominic right now was risking their plan, but he was letting her instead of stopping her.

"Thanks," she whispered, opening the compartment between them. She immediately caught the phone, but as she held it, she hesitated.

Joker glanced at her from time to time, only to see her staring at the phone. He didn’t say anything, letting her decide on this one. He already made a decision, and that was to give her the support she needed right now. It was up to Hera to decide whether she would act on what she wanted to do at the moment.

"Joker, do you think you can connect me to the number that was connected to the Interpol?" she asked solemnly. "That Madam. I need to talk to her."

"I can try, but not right now. I’m driving."

"But can you?"

Joker shot her a quick look. "I said I can try."

"Good." Hera opened the phone and dialed a number. Placing the phone in front of her ear, she waited for a few seconds until she heard Wolf from the other end of the line. "It’s me. Give me the details of the Five Secret Families, especially the Oxley Family."

"The Five Secret Families?" Wolf furrowed his brows.

"You never heard of them?"

"No." Wolf shook his head. "I heard about them, but there wasn’t any valuable information about them. Even the CIA barely knows these people and their secret society."

"Then you better start looking in different directions," Hera breathed out. "Because those are the people we’re up against with."

As soon as those words rolled out of her tongue, Hera ended the call. This time, Joker was looking at her.

"The Oxley Family?" he asked, watching Hera rocked her head.

"To make the story short, they are our enemy."

"That’s what Old Madam Zhu told you?"

"Yes."

"Call Wolf again," he said. "I got a hard drive about those guys."

"You know them?"

Joker peeled his gaze from her to the road. "I once worked for the secret society back in the day — before I met you, that is. I also accepted some contracts from them when you died since they were old clients. So, it’s only natural for me to know details about my clients. Who knows when they’re going to throw me under the bus?"

"What did you do for them?"

"Just some minor hacking..." Joker trailed off as he hit the brakes, pulling off the side of the road. He faced Hera squarely, his mouth falling open.

"What?" Hera cocked her head to the side.

"Uh oh."

"I don’t like that sound, Joker."

"Neither do I. Call the guys. They know where they are," Joker breathed out. "I created software for them once. It’s the first prototype of the software we have. If they got a genius like me, it would explain how they got access to Interpol and probably our system. They only need to tweak the program and — oh no. I think I hacked our own system for them. I am my own enemy."

Hera’s pupils dilated as she blurted out under her breath. "In other words, the moment they typed in the Secret Family, particularly the Oxley Family..." she trailed off, not wasting a breath as she called Wolf again.

Just like usual, Wolf answered even before the first ring could finish.

"Wolf, don’t —" Hera’s breath hitched when she heard a loud explosion from the other side. "Wolf!"

Beep... beep... beep

Her grip on the phone tightened, looking at Joker with wide eyes. Seeing her reaction, Joker ground his teeth and stepped on the pedal as hard as he could. The tires screeched as smoke ascended from the ground. He didn’t need to hear whatever she had to say because her face already told him.

Their enemies knew Hera left the base and came to attack while she was away.

"Those sly sons of a bitch!"
