Axel sat beside Grandma Zhu’s bed. His eyes fixated on the old madam’s wrinkly side profile. Her usual elegance was gone. The woman who was respected and feared before was now nothing but a sickly old lady.
When Axel was a child, he often heard how great of a woman his grandmother was. He could still remember a time in his childhood when Old Madam Zhu protected him from the people who were bullying him. At that time, he thought that he was blessed to be born into this family. He was grateful to have someone protect him, no matter what.
At that time, Axel truly and deeply never would have imagined feeling this sick and repelled by the same people and family. Except for his brother and Dominic’s children, Axel just couldn’t see the reason he needed to reconnect with the rest of the family.
"Second Young Master." Suddenly, Butler Fu’s surprised voice rang behind Axel. "I didn’t know you would stop by today, Second Young Master. The Old Madam will be —"
"I didn’t come here to see how she’s doing, Butler Fu." Axel’s voice was low and solemn, eyes still on the Old Madam’s side profile. "I am here for you."
Butler Fu narrowed his eyes slightly. "What do you need from me, Second Young Master?"
"I met someone the other night, and she asked me to do her a favor. Don’t worry. She didn’t ask me to kill Grandma because she thinks that’ll be too much for me to do."
"Second Young Master..."
Axel slowly rose from his seat, facing Butler Fu squarely. "Butler Fu, I think you already know who this person is and what this person wants. And I think you also know what will happen if I don’t deliver."
Butler Fu held his breath while assessing Axel’s expression. He didn’t need to wonder if Axel was telling the truth because Butler Fu watched these boys grow up. Axel was serious.
"You met with Florence Oxley?" he blurted out quietly, and although Axel didn’t answer, it was enough to confirm. "She wants Old Madam Zhu’s contacts?"
Axel nodded. "She wants to make sure Old Madam Zhu doesn’t pull anything anymore."
"Second Young Master, I —"
"Butler Fu, you were a hitman before, weren’t you?" His tone changed, this time more stern and commanding. "As a person who cleans up for her, do you think I believe you know nothing about this? You devoted your entire life to my grandmother to the point you couldn’t even start your own family."
Butler Fu lowered his head, his lips drawn into a thin line. He expected to hear such condescending remarks from Dominic, as the latter was the type to hurt people with just words. But he didn’t fathom Axel would bring up his dirty past in such a manner.
"It’s not like I judge you. Perhaps I would if this was before, but things are different and if I judge you now, I would be a hypocrite. As much as possible, I don’t want to be just like Grandma or my parents. I’m not perfect and I try not to be one just like them," Axel continued. "Give me the list of her contacts."
"Second Young Master, I can’t."
"Why?"
"Old Madam Zhu already told your brother about her contacts. I might’ve cleaned up for the Old Madam, but there were certain things she preferred to keep to herself. All I know are some of them and the Madam already passed these contacts to your brother." Butler Fu slowly lifted his eyes to the second young master. "If the young master entrusted that list to you, then I would keep my mouth shut. However, I am not the one handing over the list of people Old Madam Zhu protected all these years and the people who she had been doing business with."
Axel sneered at Butler Fu’s remarks. "You don’t trust me?"
"It’s not whether I trust or don’t trust you, Second Young Master." Butler Fu lowered his gaze. "It is simply not my place to do so."
"Then what can you do, hmm?"
This time, Butler Fu remained quiet.
"To tell you the truth, I already know the list. I’ve seen it. My big brother told me to take a look at it." After a minute of pure silence, Axel straightened his back and shoved his hands inside his pockets. A wry and meek smile appeared on his face when Butler Fu lifted his eyes to him. "Lukas Silvers, Eva Ani, Mr. Chan... I know all of them. I looked them up, did some digging, and the sort."
Surprise instantly washed over Butler Fu’s face upon hearing the list of people Old Madam Zhu kept secret to have been in contact with. Myriads of questions crossed the butler’s mind at this revelation, but one thing stood out.
If Axel already knew the list, why was he here?
"Were you testing me, Second Young Master?" he inquired under his breath, as this was the only conclusion he came up with.
"No." Axel shook his head. "I’m just telling you that Florence Oxley used this same unfairness to reel me in with her wicked plans. If not for my brother, I could see myself biting that bait. It’s simply a reminder to myself that I would never be like this to Basti and Miri. We would never make them feel that the other one is better than the other."
Butler Fu knew that wasn’t his intention. However, he couldn’t deny the sense of shame that crept into his heart upon hearing Axel’s remarks.
"But that is not the real reason I am here." Axel cleared his throat, waiting for Butler Fu to raise his head. "What I need isn’t the list of people Old Madam Zhu was in business with. I want yours."
"What?"
"You said it yourself, Butler Fu. You clean up all the mess Old Madam Zhu makes," he stressed each syllable in hopes Butler Fu would grasp what he meant. "I’m not so stupid to think you did it all by yourself. You managed to keep Old Madam Zhu squeaky clean, and I want those people to do the same job for me. Things will be a complete mess once this party is over, and I need people who can clean the mess as if it didn’t happen."
His expression turned solemn as a glint of determination flickered across his eyes. "I don’t want some people to end up behind bars and gathering the best lawyers isn’t enough. I want that list. This is not a request, but an order from the current head of the family."
