Khalifa: Queen in the Apocalypse-Chapter 196: Liftoff
The two helicopters were geared into action, and the large elysees began to turn. Soon, the area was filled with the noise of propellers, with strong winds messing up everyone’s hairs.
The council went to see them off, led by General Smith.
He smiled, patting Kylo’s shoulder. "Good luck," he said, "May this mission go well."
"Thank you, sir." Kylo said with a smile. This man was basically his mentor, a father figure of sorts.
"We’ll succeed and perhaps we can find out more about this virus and how to deal with it."
The general nodded, "Godspeed, child. Godspeed."
Without further ado, the team separated to the two helicopters.
The General’s soft eyes watched as they left, a sharp glint passing his eyes.
May you meet your maker soon, indeed.

"Everything is good, over!" The radio sounded, signaling that everything was fine in the other helicopter.
Kylo then opened the radio again, for instructions. "We will pick up someone at your 11 o’clock direction, hover over that area for a bit."
While a little surprised, the other helicopter naturally agreed.
A few moments later, Hugo’s helicopter lowered and stabilized over an area, attracting all zombies around. The people in the other helicopter watched as they dropped a ladder.
"Who do you think they’re picking up in that place?" Olaf asked, then cackled at his own joke. "A zombie?"
Kelvin rolled his eyes as he went back in his corner and shut his eyes like a cool quiet person, while Liam just shook his head.
Abu was just watching curiously below, in silence. But then he saw something and flinched, waving for the others to see.
Paul whistled as they watched a man emerge from the mobs of zombies as if he was from there, and walked leisurely to the ladder.
"Ah, I know him! Jacob, right?" Liam said. He was familiar with them as one of the people who came with Kylo to the Peace Base. "It’s his ability."
"Quite cool."
"Hmm.."
However, a few sharper ones couldn’t help but pause, looking at the man climbing.
He was completely unperturbed by the swarm of flesh-eating monsters around him.
Was that man really human?

Back in Hugo’s helicopter, they greeted Jacob’s arrival with Khalifa embracing him with a smile.
"Welcome back," she said, and he smiled, hugging her closer.
"Missed you," he said, and she did the same.
They looked so loving that it burned the other men’s eyes.
"Let’s get going now," Hugo said and gently parted them together. His kind smile turned a little hostile as he shifted his gaze to the newcomer.
"Take a seat," he rudely told Jacob, while gently guiding Khalifa back to her own seat.
And so, the trip officially began. The two helicopters were never too far apart, and radio communication was constant. As they flew, they also perfected their plans, and double checked on their tools and equipment.
Speaking of equipment, they had complete sets of portable ones, with each expert responsible for their own machines. .
They also had other tools that should be used to distract the monsters. For one, there was a ring that would sound for ten minutes straight. This would let them buy time as needed.
It wasn’t that they hadn’t tried covering themselves to mask their smell, but it didn’t work. Zombies had a different radar in them that could detect living beings within a certain radius away.
It was unfortunate, but a part of them were also relieved, as they didn’t want to be surrounded by zombie innards anyway.
They also double-checked each specialist’s equipment, making sure nothing was left not considered.
"We will land in the helipad above sector 8B, on one of the buildings there," Kylo said. This was the area right above the entrance to the underground laboratory.
"The virus scientists are in the lowest basement 5. Kelvin, Liam, and Abu would be most important here."
Kelvin and Liam would check for hazards and health of the survivors, Abu would be looking for survivors, and the rest would be ready to handle them.
"Yes sir!"
"Has everyone memorized the maps and passwords?"
"Yes, sir!"
He also looked at Khalifa and the others, who nodded.
Kylo smiled and continued with the review.
Anyway, the more they discussed, the more confident they became with the mission.
The fact that they could see mobs of millions of zombies fluttering under them and could only look up was nauseating as it was also very satisfying.
For afar, it was like seeing maggots, but they knew dropping there was certain death in the most horrific way possible.
The research center was located in the suburb area, a special zone where the tallest building was four storeys tall. The entire place was a few hectares large—-huge as it was placed smack in the city—but a lot of the facilities were actually underground.
The flight took about two hours by helicopter, with them catching sight of the complex not too far away. It only took them ⅔ of the estimated time they declared before, primarily because Hugo secretly optimized it.
He smugly told them that if he didn’t do this, they’d still be over those disgusting piles of millions of zombies right now.
"Yes, yes, you’re amazing," they said, but Hugo was not done showing off.
Hugo wanted to show off his ability, inspired by what Khalifa did before. During their time apart, he trained very hard in order to distract himself. Otherwise, he’d have long run to danger even if he, or his base, was far from ready.
He closed his eyes and touched the body of the helicopter.
In his mind’s eye, he could see every metallic part of the machine. He had done this before they left, just in case, so to be honest he wasn’t expecting to find an anomaly—he just wanted to share the status of the machine or something.
Then somehow, right under one of the most interior hoods, he found something new that shouldn’t be there.
He found a bomb.
He turned pale and his eyes widened into saucers.
