Khalifa: Queen in the Apocalypse-Chapter 197: The Fall
There was a bomb in their ride, hundreds of meters above the ground, and he couldn’t tell how long they had before it exploded.
Fuck, fuck, fuckity fuckit
He whipped his head to Kylo and then to Joel. "Park the helicopter to the nearest surface! NOW!!" he yelled.
"Tell the other helicopter to do the same!!"
Kaize looked at him. In all his years of knowing this jerk, he had never seen him so panicked.
Hugo was definitely not having these confused looks right now!

The few seconds of staring irked Hugo very much. "DO IT!" He yelled, "There’s a bomb!!"
"WHAT?!"
Immediately, the helicopter swerved. It shocked the others but they quickly followed when Kylo radioed them the news.
They found the widest roof deck nearby, jumping down as soon as they could.
The other helicopter did the same, sparing no more time to get to safety. Unfortunately, they were still too late.
Before both drivers could get down, both machines exploded. It went by fast and even poor Kelvin was torn to half.
"Shit!!"
Instantaneously, Cauis built earth wall and Hugo built metals in an attempt to soften to blow.
He tried to include as many as he could but heavy injuries were inevitable—everyone just prayed that they survive.
The force of the explosion plunged metal sheet at them, pushing them further, breaking a few bones.
The shockwave was strong and while they were mostly guarded from the explosion, the force propelled them backward and they ended up falling off the building.
Khalifa, guarded by Kylo’s strong arms and body, twisted to face the direction of the fall. She manifested an ice slide to catch them.
Thump!
Oof!
The slide caught them all, but it was like falling down a floor. The hit exacerbated their current injuries. Not to mention, it was steep and they were still injured a bit more on their way down.
Khalifa’s eyes twitched at the pain and also the fact that she heard a crack, no doubt the slide not being able to handle the force.
She took out crystals from her space to be her source of energy as she reinforced the world’s largest slide of death.
The metal sheet that shielded them fell on the ice, destroying the top. Their hearts stopped as they watched the top part of the ice crumble under its weight and then thanked their respective gods when their section of the slide remained stable (for now).
Now, they could only hold their breaths as they slid down as if in a roller coaster, but without any of the safety precautions.
Heaving a deep breath, Khalifa used a lot more crystals—a lot of which was Mira’s payment by the way—to create an upward slope to slow them down.
They slid to and fro until the momentum died down. They were tempted to heave a sigh of relief. Unfortunately—
BANG!
The ground shook and they turned back as they realized shadows around them shifted.
The building shook, unable to withstand the explosive force above. It began to crumble and drop—to their direction.
"Fuck!!"
"Shit!"
Curses abound as all things that could go wrong went wrong.
Amidst the deafening chaos, they could no longer discern the passing seconds.
They didn’t have the time to waste and immediately carried everyone indisposed to far from the area.
The soldiers were still more or less awake, and they apologized over and over for being useless.
"Shut up!" Kaize said to the man he was carrying on his back—Paul—who was sobbing with particular sadness, "Maintain your strength. We need everyone to survive."
He sobbed, looked down on his amputated leg.
He was useless. There was no need to waste energy on him!
However, he was unable to question more as the pain and shock eventually took his consciousness.
He was still a deadweight, but at least he was a quiet one.
Kaize didn’t even feel the changes on his shoulders because they realized that the noise attracted hordes of zombies.
Although this was a gated area and people were limited, there were still hundreds if not thousands of zombies roaming around!!
"Damn it!"
As such, the men who weren’t carrying an injured person served as shields fighting zombies at their back.
Khalifa, carried by Kylo, was not idle as she let sharp ice picks float around them, clearing the way forward.
The minutes ticked and they could only do what they could, soon ending up inside a building about a few blocks away.
Cauis blocked the door with his ability and they gently placed the injured next to a column in the lobby.
Khalifa escaped Kylo’s hold—though not without losing balance a little—in order to go to the injured. She healed them the best she could and for a while the room was dazzling with her bluish luminescence. When it was over, she looked very weak.
"Are you okay?" The men asked, looking at her extremely flushed face.
Of course, everyone knew this was not the time to be horny, and it so happened that crystals and space food were enough to revitalize her now.
In the end, Khalifa treated them next to a crystal mountain. She thought she was lucky she could get energy from these now. It would be super weird to get a quickie in the stairway right now.
No one spoke for a while after that. Everyone caught their breaths and mourned for the losses.
Soon, Khalifa gave the latest news. She looked at the young Olaf in sadness. "I couldn’t do anything for him."
She couldn’t help but recall the image of the gregarious man filled with life and optimism, and her heart clenched in pity for a lost soul.
"You did your best," Cauis said, hugging her, while Kaize felt sad for another loss and punched the nearby wall.
"Damnit!"
"I checked everything right before going…" Hugo said, feeling guilty for not finding the bomb earlier.
Kylo was also feeling heavy, not feeling any different. Other than Hugo, it was his own people who handled the machines. Who else could’ve done it?
It could only be one of his people who could’ve done it, or at the very least, allowed for it to happen.
What didn’t change was that they hadn’t even started the mission and they already experienced heavy and unnecessary losses.
Soldiers like them were fine to sacrifice for the greater good, but what was this?
His side lost three people. The driver, Pete, Olaf the young medic, and Kelvin, the Infiltration expert.
His heart pained at the three soldiers he lost, as well as Joel who drove the other helicopter.
Not to mention Hugo, who had just been drinking with the man a couple days prior.
"Who could’ve done it?"
They looked at the unconscious soldiers.
Did they have a traitor in their midst?
