Magus Bloodlines.-Chapter 47 The new quest

Gavin inhaled sharply as a sudden pain filled his head. Something was happening. He felt a strange primal energy rush through him as he sat at the table with Jackson. It was electrifying and set his nerves on fire as he sat there. He gripped the table, his knuckles white from the intensity of it as he closed his eyes to endure the bizarre wave of power. Alert, a female beta has been chosen and bonded with the pack. New mission, select a beta male for status within the pack. The beta is the second in command when alpha is not present. The beta is responsible for assisting in missions and relaying orders from the alpha. Reward, instant level up. Gavin's mind spun as Veronica suddenly spoke up.

A female Beta has been chosen? Did this have something to do with the growing bond between Erza and Helena, Gavin thought. How was a Beta female chosen? What is going on? All these questions and more filled Gavin's mind as he glanced from Jackson, stuffing his face like nothing was wrong, to the bathroom where the girls disappeared a few moments ago.

Jackson noticed the sudden shift in Gavin's attention and demeanor and had a feeling something was wrong. He put the bite of food down he was about to take. He looked up and asked him, "Hey, what's that serious look on your face? The last time I saw that look was when you went to play hero during the attack." Jackson's face was grim, mouth set tight as he focused on Gavin's reactions. Something was not right with his friend.

Gavin looked back at Jackson for a moment, lost in his thoughts as he took time to answer. "I'm not sure. I felt a strong wave of primal power just rush through me. I've got no idea what's going on, but I'm about to go find the girls," Gavin said finally. His voice was a calm, quiet whisper. Right as he stood up from the seat, he let out a breath of relief. Erza and Helena were walking their way from the bathroom.

Gavin rushed over and stopped in front of Erza. He pulled her into his arms and held her for a moment. He didn't realize how quickly his heart was beating until he felt her body against his. The pressure reassured him that she really was alright. She chuckled softly as she ran her fingers through his dark curls. "What's wrong baby?" she asked in a soft tone, as if speaking to someone in the middle of a panic attack. Calm and soothing.

"I'm not sure, honestly. All of a sudden, I felt this wave of power wash over me. It was powerful and ancient in intensity," Gavin whispered as he looked into her amber eyes. He was searching for some kind of answer, something maybe she knew about.

Erza shared a long look with Helena, who nodded. "Might as well tell wolf boy before he loses his mind," she said with mirth.

Gavin looked between the girls, his brows furrowed in confusion. "Tell me what?" he asked.

"We had a conversation in the bathroom, of all places," Erza started to say. She took a moment to consider her words before she continued. "I asked her to be my official Beta in our little pack," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. It was almost like she was afraid of Gavin's reaction to this.

Gavin looked even more confused, "You did what?" he asked her. The only conceptual understanding of the beta position was what Veronica just said in his head a few moments ago.

Erza nodded. "Our wolf pack. It's not the most ordinary pack by any means. You, yourself chose a non-wolf mate. That makes me the alpha-female of the pack. I need a second, and so do you. That is where the Betas come in, and I asked Helena to be the female Beta," Erza said quickly.

Gavin stepped back, considering what he was told. "So you asked her to be your Beta?" he confirmed with the question.

Helena nodded. "She did. Once I agreed, a wave of power surged between us. It was primal, feral even," Helena explained as she visibly shook from the memory of it. "It seemed to forge a connection between me and Erza," Helena said as she looked between the two alphas.

"What sort of connection?" Gavin asked her, his voice soft and laced with confusion, but also intrigue. He had never heard of anything like this before.

Helena paused, her finger on her chin as she considered the way to explain it. "It's like, I feel a connection to her, her mood, her power. I'm not sure. All I know, is it is a deep connection that feels magical between us now," Helena said. She was unsure how to explain it. Nor did she even understand exactly what was going on. This was all new and strange to her.

Erza nodded. "It's the same for me. I feel her mood, her strength, her closeness, like a physical feeling," Erza said as she squeezed Gavin's hand.

"Huh, that would explain the quest that Veronica just gave me. I think when you guys did that bonding thing in the bathroom, since I am seen as the alpha of this little band of merry men, It also forged a bond within myself. I felt a surge of deep, ancient power while I was sitting at the table. It was like something I'd never felt before. It was like my entire body was electrified while I sat there." Gavin began explaining things from his side while they went into the bathroom.

"Then Veronica popped into my head, with a notification that the beta female was selected for the pack hierarchy. Then she gave me a quest; to find and select a beta male for the position." Gavin continued on to them as they walked over to their table where Jackson was waiting.

"So, who are you going to pick?" Helena asked Gavin as they all sat down. She was curious and had no idea how this all worked.

Gavin thought for a moment, then looked at Jackson. Gavin had a grin on his face as he asked, "Hey Jackson. Do you want an official part of this misfit pack?" Gavin asked him, his fangs flashing with a grin.
