Chapter 124: Charge

Time waited for no one. This was both a blessing and a curse. To those in Crestfall City, the passage of time represented not just a new day. But the eventual chaos that would follow.

Those in the city were divided into two outlooks. There were those who dreaded the incoming invasion and those who welcomed it. The former either fled, relaxed to die in peace, or came to watch and shorten the wait.

Those who belonged to the latter were perhaps the greatest example of the human spirit.

"Let’s sit over there! Come on! Before someone else takes them!"

"HOT DOGS! GET YOUR JUICY HOT DOGS! 12 CROWNS EACH!"

"This is Kate Harris reporting for Channel 3 News; I am now in front of the..."

"I wish time would pass faster; I am getting bored."

"Bro, you see the dip in the stocks? If we survive this, we are going to be rich!"

"Hi Chat! Remember to support me later in my post later, okay? Love you lots!"

"Be sure to like, share, and subscribe for more content!"

"This spot good? Yeah, that works. Let’s camp here for now."

"I will be giving commentary on the new faction, the Weapons of Valestra."

Despite being told that the area just outside the city would turn into a literal war zone, thousands came. The people were packed like sardines. Hundreds sat on blankets as if on a picnic. Just as many brought high-end video equipment to capture what came later.

In the entire vicinity, only one area lacked people. It was the space around Elian Reed. He sat on a chair made of Living Metal, together with a few others.

"Humans are really deranged, incomprehensible bastards," Elian couldn’t help exclaiming. "I expected them to come, but this was way more than I expected."

Fluffy, who was in her dog form, yawned out of boredom, "And you stupid idiots have the audacity to claim that you are the smartest species on Earth. Even animals know to run from an approaching calamity."

A beautiful woman brushed Fluffy’s silky coat in contentment. "And what does that make you, then, you sleepy flea-infested nitwit? Aren’t you here too?" Bianca teased.

The bird on her shoulder added, "I beg to disagree, master. Lady Fluffy is a sleepy, flea-infested nitwit who has a body line that exudes grace and power. Her very breath carries the scent of fruity goodness in every drop."

Raising her head, Fluffy glared at the Flame Swallow. "Did you just recycle a line from a product commercial from Earth to praise me, you morbidly obese glowstick?"

"I most certainly did not!" Burny said as he hurriedly took flight.

"Oy! Get back here! Burny! Or I will unleash a rainstorm of scorched earth on your butt!"

Elian shook his head in disbelief at what he heard and leaned back. "Bianca, did you let them watch weird crap on their smartphones again? You know their brains are going to turn to mush, right? Those platforms are addictive to simple-minded idiots."

"I told them it was only until we came here," Bianca assured. Frowning, she added, "If you don’t want them to turn stupid, then take them out to play."

"But I’m tired. I spent the night working. Can’t they just sit still and shut up?"

"Darling? You helped make them! It’s partly your responsibility."

"Ugh."

Elian got up and looked around for the hyperactive bird and dog pair that had just run away. Unlike Burny and Fluffy, Bastion and Silent were quietly nuzzling each other, bathing under the hot sun. Checking the time, there were still thirty minutes until the invasion arrived.

Before he could check, a pair of humans walked towards them. An armored man and a blonde woman. They were familiar but looked like they had just come from a war zone. They were covered in soot and dirt; the woman’s hair was a mess, and her clothes were full of holes.

Bianca, recognizing who had just arrived, greeted them with worry.

"Char! Ned! What happened to you two?"

But rather than a warm reply, Charlotte glared at Bianca and poked her with a finger, "You conniving little tramp! You knew this would happen! That’s why you bastards hung around my shop!"

Bianca made an exaggerated gasp before asking in an over-the-top manner, "Oh no? What happened? Are you all right?"

Char bit her lip before her tears began to fall. "The last location the assassins knew for you two was in my office! They attacked us relentlessly! You changed faces when you left, didn’t you? They wouldn’t believe us no matter how much we screamed that you were not there!"

Hearing Charlotte’s pitiful cry, laughter began to spill out from Elian. He smacked his chest to stop himself from making a sound. "Oof, yes. That is most unfortunate. I am sorry that you had to experience that."

"Stop smirking while you apologize; you pale-skinned, crazy turd!"

"Char! Why are you going after Elian? He didn’t do anything wrong!"

"Zip it, Bianca! Neddy is the only reason I am alive. My business is in shambles; it was a good thing I sent my teams out to guard the city; otherwise, they all might have died."

Bianca and Elian’s ears perked up at a single word: "Neddy?"

"That’s what I call this wonderful man beside me!" Charlotte snapped, "He is dashing, heroic, and so marvelous!"

Elian grinned at his best friend, "You look like you had a fun night."

Ned made an equally large smile. "Hell yeah, I did. Who knew smashing skulls would be so fun? You’re sure I can’t join later?"

"That would be... huh?"

In that moment, Elian saw something move. Figures that seemed to bend light itself ran toward him. He looked behind him and saw more people who had the same gimmick. They attacked in a coordinated formation.

But Elian did not even worry. He only pitied the poor bastards.

"Enjoy."

From the shadows on the ground, metallic figures leapt out. There were a dozen human assassins, yet metallic dogs three times that number mauled them. Each human was taken down by a group of dogs the color of onyx. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

Without mercy, the dogs ripped the tendons on the wrists and ankles of the humans. Turning them into vegetables. It was so fast that the tourists didn’t even notice the commotion. They only began to scream when they saw the blood and the army of metal dogs.

"WOW! ARE THOSE NEW WEAPONS?"

"I THOUGHT THERE WERE ONLY THREE!"

"WHERE DID THESE BASTARDS COME FROM?"

"They look cute! I want one!"

When Ned noticed the danger, he immediately placed his lover between his body and shield. Protected between walls of Living Metal, Charlotte surrendered herself to him.

"Lottie, are you okay? Did I startle you?"

"N-No. I’m okay. Thanks, Neddy; you saved me again..."

As there was no danger, to Elian and Bianca they looked like they were acting in a badly written skit. Bianca unmasked the ones on the ground and remarked coldly, "None are worth using."

"Got it. Kill them all."

With one command, the three dozen metal dogs ripped apart the men and women who attacked. Those watching grew fearful at the sight. But no one really cared about them. Elian turned to Ned and gave him the equipment of the dead assassin.

"Ned, sell these for me at the bank. Look for Silas; tell him HSK sent you."

He nodded but raised an eyebrow. "Is having multiple aliases a thing for you two? How many do you even have?"

"Not important. Anyway, thanks for the save, Ned. Rest for now and keep Char safe."

"Always. take care, brother," Ned bid farewell and pulled Charlotte to safety.

Bianca took Elian’s hand and reminded him, "Five minutes, darling. You ready?"

"Not really? But we did what we could. I hope they are just as easy to kill as the red ants."

Just then, a loud static sound resonated in the sky. It sounded like the sharp thrum of electricity passing at high speeds.

[Time to Virexar arrival: 00:00:00]

[Virexar and Earth have been connected. The invasion has begun.]

[Crucible match 1789756-45 has begun.]

[Glory be to the Tyrants!]

A large red doorway appeared out of thin air. It was a gigantic dungeon gate. The onlookers all began to chatter and record the arrival of the invaders. Curious about what the beings from Virexar looked like, the humans all turned silent.

Only two chatted with themselves.

"Elian. Elian."

"Yes Bianca?"

"Moment of truth, you sure you don’t want to say a one-liner?"

"Whatever for?"

"’Cause it’s cool?"

"No need."

"You’re no fun."

"I don’t need to be fun."

Elian raised his arm and swung it down. "Attack."

All of a sudden, the surroundings got really bright. The illumination was so intense that the night turned today. Everyone looked up and saw thousands of Flame Swallows in the sky. Each person only had one question in their mind.

"Since when?"

But sadly, they would never find out the answer. Because in the next moment. All hell broke loose.

"FOR THE FIRE! FOR AVERIGNIS! BURN MY BROTHERS!" roared Burny. In the next moment, he tucked his wings in and dove to increase his speed.

"FOR THE FIRE," his fellow swallows echoed before following suit.

That day, Earth would bear witness to the might of Averignis. As if someone took a cup of lava and spilled it from the heavens, the very air burned. Like an ocean of living flames, the thousands of flame swallows moved as one.

What followed couldn’t even be described as a detonation.

It was as if the very earth split in two. And the planet’s core decided to rise from the ground just to burn everything in sight.

"Charade, Golem."

Elian equipped his wall armor.

"WEAPONS OF VALESTRA!"

From the ground, hundreds of three-meter-tall wolves of metal appeared. Leading them were three that dwarfed the rest at 12 meters.

"SPARE NO ONE! CHARGE!"
