Chapter 43: Chapter 41 Repaying Kindness

Li Si spent the entire night tossing and turning, dreaming of the scene when those two men had grabbed her. As a result, she didn’t sleep well and woke up with a severe headache.

She glanced at the clock—it was already 8:30 in the morning. She yawned lazily, got out of bed, washed her face, and brushed her teeth. Sniffing the clothes she’d worn yesterday, now sitting atop the washing machine, she wrinkled her face in disgust and tossed them into the trash can. What bad luck!

Even now, the thought of it made her feel uneasy. Forget it, thinking about it only makes her headache worse!

At that moment, the doorbell rang. Li Si’s heart skipped a beat. She didn’t know anyone in this place—who could it be?

She tiptoed over and peeked outside through the peephole. Relieved, she exhaled; it was Leng Mochen.

"Brother Leng, just a moment!"

Li Si suddenly remembered Xiao Guai was still in the bedroom. She quickly rushed back, scooped up the sleeping little monkey, and stored him in the space. With that done, she hurried to the door, smiling as she opened it, a little breathless, saying, "Brother Leng, why are you here so early?"

"Morning exercise. The housekeeper at home made too much breakfast, so I brought some for you." Leng Mochen caught a whiff of the sweet fragrance emanating from her—it had to be her scent, which was pleasant.

Taking a closer look at Li Si, he noticed she had likely just washed her face and was makeup-free. Her skin was fresh and fair, with bright eyes and pearly teeth. Though there were faint dark circles under her eyes indicating a poor night’s sleep, overall, she seemed in decent spirits. Clearly, the girl hadn’t been utterly overtaken by yesterday’s incident.

"Come in! Brother Leng, have a seat first. I’ll change my clothes!" Li Si glanced down, realizing she was still wearing her pink long-sleeve pajamas—without a bra. Embarrassed, she hurried off to the bedroom.

Leng Mochen made himself at home, heading to the dining area. He unpacked the still-warm layers of food containers one by one—congee in one, buns in another, and small side dishes in the top layer. He then went to the kitchen, found a pair of bowls and chopsticks, washed them under the tap, and set them neatly on the table.

By the time Li Si came out wearing black sportswear, she didn’t see Leng Mochen in the living room. Following the sound, she found him methodically setting up the utensils. Her heart warmed.

"Brother Leng, you don’t need to bother! Thank you so much—have you eaten already?" Li Si reached for the pair of chopsticks he handed her. Staring at the simple yet steaming breakfast before her, her eyes grew misty, and she lowered her gaze to hide her emotions.

"I’ve eaten. You go ahead!" Leng Mochen casually took in the surroundings of the house. The décor was decent, but it felt rather empty. When he’d gone to the kitchen earlier, he had only seen a few basic cooking tools.

"Alright, it looks delicious! Yum!" Li Si didn’t say much; her stomach was indeed growling. Facing someone like a big brother, she didn’t hold back and dug right in.

After breakfast, Li Si diligently rinsed the food containers clean at the kitchen sink.

The two of them sat on the couch chatting. Li Si hesitated for a long time before finally voicing her question, "Brother Leng, I noticed you don’t look very well. Are you unwell?"

"I was in a car accident two years ago, suffered severe head injuries, and was in a coma for a long time. I only woke up about six months ago, so I still need time to recuperate." Leng Mochen didn’t hide it, summarizing what had happened.

"Brother Leng, are you still taking medication?" Li Si felt fortunate for him—surviving such a disaster surely meant blessings ahead!

"I’m still taking some, mostly nutritional supplements. Don’t worry. Are you still attending school?"

"I’m in my second year. Brother Leng, let me pour you some water and prepare some fruit, alright?" Li Si considered that even a small favor deserved immense gratitude—let alone the life-saving kindness Leng Mochen had shown her. She was determined to repay him properly.

No matter what his health issues were, at the very least consuming fruit from her space and water from the magical river might help him improve.

"Alright. Where did you buy this fruit? It seems pretty good!" Leng Mochen had slept well the night before and felt refreshed this morning.

He watched as Li Si carried the tray holding two glasses of water and a large plate of freshly washed fruit to the coffee table.

Curious, Leng Mochen asked, "Why does this fruit look different from the usual ones you get at the market?" Its appearance alone made it appetizing, and the strong fruity aroma was enticing. Considering he wasn’t usually fond of fruit, it was unusual that he now found himself wanting to try it.

"It’s watered with spring water. A relative of mine grows it and usually only sells to acquaintances. If you like it, Brother Leng, I can send you some when I return to North City!" Li Si made up an excuse, silently wondering if it was possible to mail the fruit nowadays.

"Alright, but I’ll pay you for it."

"No way, Brother Leng! You’re my savior. If you mention money again, I’ll be angry!" Li Si pouted, her face showing a hint of displeasure.

"Alright, then promise to provide me fruit for free in the future, okay?"

"Now that’s more like it!" Li Si secretly rejoiced, smiling like a little squirrel.

Leng Mochen chuckled, taking a sip of the cold river water. He glanced at her, noticing her slight nervousness. "You seem a little flustered."

"Not at all! Not at all." Li Si vehemently denied it, quickly taking a sip from her own glass of water to hide her unease.

"This water hasn’t been boiled? It’s cold. Do you have any warm water?" Leng Mochen didn’t think much of it, taking another sip. The water was clean and sweet, but given that it was winter, it didn’t seem appropriate for her to drink chilled water.

"Brother Leng, to be honest, this is mountain spring water—it’s best drank cold. I brought it back from North City!" Starting with the lie, Li Si figured she might as well keep going. Forgive me, Brother Leng—it’s all for your own good!

"Mountain spring water? Well, I’ve heard it loses its properties when heated. But you girls should avoid drinking cold water—it’s not great for your health!" Leng Mochen finished the water, savoring its taste, and turned his attention to the fruit.

"I don’t drink it often. Brother Leng, before you leave, I’ll prepare a batch for you to take home. Drinking it regularly will definitely help with your recovery!"

"Alright. But you brought it all the way from North City—keep it for yourself!" Leng Mochen didn’t think much of the water. After all, he had been using supplements like he was eating meals—none of which had significantly helped. How could mere spring water possibly make a difference?

"I still have plenty! Also, Brother Leng, I should warn you—after drinking this water, you might need to visit the restroom a bit more often. But don’t worry; it just means your body is detoxing! Wait a second, Brother Leng, I’ll go get something!" Li Si dashed into her bedroom, looking for bottles she could fill with the space’s river water. Luckily, she had empty beverage bottles at home.

Leng Mochen chuckled softly, shaking his head at her hurried retreat. She truly was a child!

She emptied the bottles, rinsed them thoroughly under the tap, then slipped into her space, ignoring Xiao Guai’s enthusiastic reaction upon seeing her. Quickly, she filled the bottles with river water and came out again.

Taking a breath to steady herself, Li Si tidied up her slightly messy hair and returned to the living room to sit on the couch.

"Brother Leng, here’s a bottle for you. Just drink one cup every other day. The rest should be kept cold in the refrigerator—don’t heat it up!" Li Si didn’t know if heating would nullify its effects, so she solemnly emphasized her instructions.

"Sure, I’ll remember." Leng Mochen accepted the bottle, examining it briefly before placing it on the coffee table.

Relieved, Li Si thought, as long as he followed the routine, he should see results soon. At least it would repay part of the favor.

Not long after, Leng Mochen frowned, his face showing a trace of discomfort, "Where’s your restroom?"

"Oh, turn right and you’ll find it. Brother Leng, you should rest in the guest room next door afterward. I’ll head back to my room now." Li Si spoke swiftly, her heart secretly delighted—it seemed to be working!

Leng Mochen rushed to the restroom, making three trips before he was done. Walking unsteadily, he made his way to the guest room by the restroom and collapsed onto the bed.

Staring at the ceiling light above, he smiled wryly. This girl—if he hadn’t judged her character right, he would’ve assumed this was some sort of prank!

Happy Dragon Boat Festival, everyone!
