Rebirth: I Am Not the Movie Queen This Time-Chapter 22 Change
Chapter 22: Chapter 22 Change
Wan Chu’er complained that Manager Bai wasn’t a decent person. A proper person, who would climb over walls? Such a grown man, acting like a lunatic all day, God knows what sneaky things he’s up to.
Before she knew it, she had arrived at her own home. The distance between the school and the Glass Factory Family Quarters was short; it was only a twenty-minute walk, which was one of the benefits of a small town.
The living room at home was filled with washed cucumbers and radishes. Bai Zhixi was sitting on one side, cutting cucumbers, and the cut cucumbers were poured directly into a large basin.
When she saw Wan Chu’er enter the house, she exclaimed in surprise, "Chuchu, how come you’re back?"
Wan Chu’er smiled and said, "I came back to have lunch with you. At a glance, I knew you hadn’t cooked. Are you planning to skip meals again?"
Bai Zhixi stood up, wiping her hands, and guiltily said, "How could that be? I was just about to cook. It’s such a waste of your time to come back here. You should still eat out from now on."
Wan Chu’er put down her backpack and took the initiative to go to the kitchen to help her mother cook.
"I’m going to have lunch at home from now on, rest at home for half an hour, and then go back to school. Only with good rest can I have the energy to continue studying in the afternoon."
In her previous life, Wan Chu’er had gotten used to taking a lunch break for over a decade.
Bai Zhixi thought about it, feeling that resting well was indeed important, so she didn’t say anything more and just sped up her actions to quickly prepare lunch for her daughter.
The two of them chatted leisurely while cooking, and the atmosphere was warm and harmonious.
Through their idle talk, Wan Chu’er learned that Bai Zhixi had bought seventy pounds of cucumbers, twenty pounds of radishes, ten pounds of long beans, and ten pounds of lotus roots.
"Mom, can you handle it all by yourself?" Wan Chu’er was worried that Bai Zhixi might tire herself out. In her last life, Bai Zhixi had collapsed while fixing shoes.
Bai Zhixi replied with ease, "It’s not tiring at all. Thinking of all this can be exchanged for money, and if it all sells, we could earn at least US$ 100, it makes me feel very motivated.
Don’t worry, I’ll be able to have the pickled cucumbers ready today. After pickling for two days, they can be delivered to the restaurant on the third day. Tomorrow I’ll be able to prepare the radishes, long beans, and lotus roots as well."
Wan Chu’er nodded but cautioned with concern, "If you feel tired, rest up before continuing. Health is more important than making money."
Bai Zhixi was very happy with her daughter’s thoughtfulness and care, continuously nodding her head, "Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of myself. I’m still looking forward to seeing you get into Beijing University and then getting married and having children."
Hearing the words ’getting married and having children’, Wan Chu’er paused, her heart contracting.
In her past life, she, out of sheer stupidity, had personally terminated the child in her womb, a pain that made her suffocate whenever she thought of it.
Bai Zhixi didn’t notice Wan Chu’er’s abnormal reaction and just said, "Alright, go set the table. Get some pickled cucumber, and mom will quickly scoop out the noodles."
In a hurry, Bai Zhixi cooked some noodles with a few greens in it and cracked two eggs poached in water.
Wan Chu’er replied in a subdued tone and went to get a plate to serve the pickled cucumber.
She remembered that she had promised Wu Family Noodle House to deliver some pickled cucumber yesterday, and planned to do so after her nap.
At lunch, Wan Chu’er frowned at the two poached eggs in her bowl.
Bai Zhixi quickly explained, "You’re growing, and your studies are so demanding every day..."
Then, under the watchful gaze of her daughter with a stern face, her voice got lower and lower until she couldn’t continue, finally obediently picking up a poached egg from her daughter’s bowl and placing it into her own.
Ah, when Chuchu is angry, she can indeed be frightening.
Wan Chuchu spoke again with earnest, "Mom, from now on, we eat the same meals. If there’s something good, we’ll enjoy it together, or else neither of us will eat it."
"Ah, I know, I know. We’ll do as you say," Bai Zhixi quickly agreed.
After eating, Wan Chuchu took out her math textbook, struggling with a problem for half an hour until she finally understood the logic. Excited but noticing it was getting late, she quickly set her alarm and lay down for an afternoon nap.
Waking from her nap, she saw there were still forty minutes before the first class of the afternoon. She had enough time to run to Wu Family Noodle House before heading to school, so she hurried to the kitchen to fill a small jar with pickled cucumbers.
Curious, Bai Zhixi asked her what she was doing, and upon hearing she was delivering to Wu Family Noodle House, suggested, "Let me go instead. You shouldn’t be late."
Wan Chuchu thought it over and found it a good idea. With her busy schoolwork ahead, Bai Zhixi would certainly have to deal with these restaurants, and since the delivery today was free, it was more appropriate for Bai Zhixi to handle this favor. After giving Bai Zhixi a few instructions, she hurried off to school.
Upon her arrival, Liu Li shrank away upon seeing Wan Chuchu, lowering her head and cowering at her own desk, her body cautious not to touch Wan Chuchu’s desk. Wan Chuchu glanced disdainfully at Liu Li’s figure and ignored her.
The afternoon classes were Physics and Chemistry, which were easier for Wan Chuchu than the morning’s Math. She listened attentively and took diligent notes.
After all, with the mind of an adult, the principles of Chemistry and Physics were clearly written in the textbook. With some extra thought, she could understand the examples the teacher explained.
During the last self-study class, the homeroom teacher Teacher Zhu indeed rearranged the seating and moved Wan Chuchu to the third row, fourth desk from the left, not exactly the middle but not off to the side either.
Wan Chuchu was pleased with her new seat and sincerely thanked Teacher Zhu.
"Thank you, Teacher."
This thank you made all the students in the classroom look over. Normally, whatever the teacher says or arranges, students just listen and do as told, without making an effort to explicitly express anything.
Wan Chuchu’s thank you, however, came as a surprise to everyone.
She couldn’t care less about what others thought of her. After sitting down, she pulled out her homework for the day and bowed her head to think.
Teacher Zhu raised an eyebrow, gave Wan Chuchu a deep look, then encouraged his students to study hard before leaving the classroom.
Back in the office, Teacher Zhu couldn’t resist discussing this with the other teachers.
"This Wan Chuchu is really different from before. I just moved her seat and she actually thanked me proactively. In the past, when I cared for her, it was like talking to a deaf person, not getting any response for ages, and when pressed, she’d snap back at you. The sun must have risen from the west."
The Chemistry teacher nearby commented, "Indeed, today she sat upright during class, her back so straight, it was as if she understood everything I was teaching." frёeωebɳovel.com
The Chinese teacher correcting homework added, "Wan Chuchu does seem different. I wonder what has spurred this change. If only all our students could undergo such a transformation, that would be wonderful."
Recalling the previous fight, the Chemistry teacher gossiped, "Do you think Liu Li’s exam papers and homework were really all done by Wan Chuchu?"
Teacher Zhu indifferently said, "In one more month we have the monthly exam, and we’ll see the truth by the results then."
Wan Chuchu, completely unaware of the office conversations, was bowed over her homework with earnest, catching the repeated glances of her new deskmate.
