Chapter 134: Petals of Violet Chrysanthemum — V
[Bonus Chapter 19]
—
"Oh, my heaven." Li Xinyuan whispered to himself, shocked. "Heavenly Demon, have the instructors been particularly harsh on your daughter during trainings?"
The child’s condition was alarming. Glaring red bruises littered her face and other parts of her body. Her visage was pale and sweat flowed down her forehead.
Had Cheon WuHui been abusing the child?
Li Xinyuan glanced at the man before rushing to the little girl’s side. "How old is she?"
A servant stepped forward to answer, but Cheon WuHui raised his hand and took a seat on the other side of the bed. "She is nine."
"Why," Li Xinyuan drew a deep breath, fingers pressed against the girl’s pulse. "Is she covered in bruises? She’s down with a fever too, how long has this gone for?"
"That is Our question as well, Spectre. Yerin has not trained a single day for the past four years. This child," Cheon WuHui gazed down at the sleeping child. "Has been weak for a long time. She bruises too easily."
Unusual.
Li Xinyuan frowned. An ominous premonition brewed in his heart. Cautiously, he raised her eyelids to check her eyes, then opened her mouth.
Bleeding gums.
With every second, the chill in his heart seemed to grow bigger.
"Has... Young Miss Yerin complained about fatigue?"
"Yes."
Li Xinyuan bit his lips, and applied pressure on Yerin’s arm. Steadily, a bright red bruise bloomed under his touch.
"Has she lost a lot of weight? What of night sweats?"
"... Yes, and yes." Cheon WuHui frowned slightly. The change in Li Xinyuan’s mood was not lost to his sharp senses.
"Oh dear," Li Xinyuan took a deep breath. "Headaches? Complaint against pain in bones? Does she have fever often?"
"I’m afraid so." Cheon WuHui nodded gravely. His hand twitched on his thigh. He wished to hold his child’s hand. But he knew better. "Is it something grave, Doctor Li? Our Demonic doctor has not been able to reach any conclusion."
Li Xinyuan’s heart raced in his chest. He prayed to be wrong, the chances of that, however, were abysmal. "... It is a conjecture. Did anyone in your family pass away from this... Nameless disease?"
"Not in Our family," said Heavenly Demon. "However, Yerin’s mother had died of this exact disease."
Fuck.
"Condolences."
"You needn’t." Cheon WuHui shook his head. "Our relationship with her mother was nothing but an obligation."
Well, isn’t that too much of a personal thing to share? Li Xinyuan grumbled internally. "Still, she was your wife, and Young Miss Yerin’s mother."
"I suppose that isn’t false either."
Asshole.
"I’m afraid, I might have a devastating diagnosis." Li Xinyuan braced himself to say the conclusion he had arrived to. "Young Miss Yerin may be suffering from... Acute Blood Cancer."
"..."
"..." Li Xinyuan watched the Heavenly Demon’s silence and felt vestiges of sympathy bloom in his chest.
"Acute what?"
Oh, right.
...
It took the surgeon about two hours to fully explain Lukemia to the Heavenly Demon as well as Hu Lijing and Bai Huiqi.
By the end of the explanation, the white fox spirit was pale, even more than he already was, if that was even possible.
"Then... However, shall you treat Our daughter?" The Heavenly Demon asked, his voice betraying none of the turmoil he might be in, if at all. "We do not wish for Our child to suffer."
"She is suffering enough as is." Li Xinyuan nodded, carefully sending a little Qi into the child’s meridians to assess the extent of damage. It was quite dismal. "The damage is big, I fear."
Behind him, Bai Huiqi gasped as if he could feel Yerin’s agony. And by the white fox spirit’s side, Hu Lijing was stiff, still in disbelief of the former’s humane reaction.
"Is there no solution at all?" Cheon WuHui dared to ask, his eyes cast down, staring at his ward intently. "Our bloodline cannot perish so easily."
Despite the seemingly detached statement, the other three individuals could feel his pain for his daughter, and refrained from making remarks.
Li Xinyuan swallowed, carefully weighed his choices in silence. "There might be a solution, though the risk in this treatment is high. Extremely so."
Stem cell. That was the only option Li Xinyuan could realistically consider.
Chemotherapy? Impossible. Radiation therapy? He doubted anyone would have a death wish of that calibre. Targeted therapy was no more feasible than the former two.
Only stem cell therapy seemed possible. But before that, he needed to perform CBC and bone marrow biopsy at the very least.
Impossible.
Li Xinyuan held his head in his hands and exhaled shakily. Why must everything be impossible? I wish I could conduct CBC and bone marrow biopsy!
As soon as the thought sank, a forgotten blue holographic screen appeared in front of him.

Li Xinyuan head snapped up, eyes wide with joy as he stood up abruptly. "We can, at least, try the treatment!"
"What?" Bai Huiqi croaked, returning from the verge of tears. "We can?"
Li Xinyuan nodded rapidly, spun around to hold Hu Lijing’s hands, they were comfortingly warm. "Yes!" Then, he grabbed Bai Huiqi’s hands. "Yes, yes, yes!"
"When?" Cheon WuHui’s deep, chilling voice cut through his joy. It helped remind Li Xinyuan where he was.
"Oh, my apologies." Flustered, Li Xinyuan saluted. "I was overwhelmed with joy... We can start the preparations for the in a few days."
"How soon?"
Li Xinyuan stopped to consider. "We... can start as soon as the Heavenly Demon can arrange a completely clean, sterile place wherein a surgery can be performed with no risk of infections."
