Chapter 31 - Marry me for responsibility

Kank!

Nak!

The sound of pipes hitting one another echoed throughout the farmland.

All around the land were the males from the village, using their shovels to dig trenches.

Since the entire place had already been dominated by water, only the people who were strong enough to carry their feet in the ground carried out this part of the task.

The others focused on connecting the pipes through the trenches the others had dug up.

[One of the villagers has successfully dug a trench.]

[Pipes are currently being connected.]

[You have gained 300sp.]

Jared stared at the template, standing at the center of the field with his pants rolled up to his knees, while wearing a black singlet.

'This is going faster than I thought. And I didn't have to give them any energy pills this time.'

He observed his surroundings for a while, and everyone seemed to be giving it their all.

'At this rate, we should finish inserting the pipes before evening. Then in the morning, all the water would have flowed out through the pipes.'

According to his plan, he would connect the pipes and network them outside the farmland, all the way to the watering hole.

He had carefully molded the sand in such a way that all the water would follow one direction, leading inside the pipe. It wasn't easy, but he did it regardless.

"Lord Jared..."

A familiar voice suddenly called out to him from behind.

Turning around, he could see Kiara standing there, dressed in rags and her body covered in mud.

Give credit where it is due; she seemed to be the one who worked the hardest.

"Kiara, are you done with your side?" asked Jared as he fully turned around to look at her.

"Yeah, Ria is already connecting the pipes with the rest of the villagers. We should be done soon," she replied.

"I see. Alright then, the other two sides should be done as well. Once we've connected the pipes, the water will have a way to flow out."

For a while, Kiara gawked at him, her eyes reading every tiny detail on his body.

She had known him for years, and yet, somehow she missed every single one.

His small yet soft lips. Sparkling dark eyes that spoke different emotions but none that could be understood. His chiseled broad chest and muscular biceps. Not the biggest but strangely attractive.

Kiara couldn't explain it, but every bit of him was suddenly interesting to her.

So much so, while she was working, most of her attention was on Jared. She wanted to finish up so fast just so she could talk to him.

And now that she was in front of him, words were scarce.

"Are you good? Your face is all weird and stuff. Do you need to rest or something?" Jared voiced out, his words directed at Kiara.

Kiara flinched. "What do you mean by weird? I'm not making any weird faces!"

"Yeah, clearly..." Jared made a robotic expression.

Not like the one on Kiara's face was doing her any justice.

After a while, she calmed down, her hand scratching the back of her head.

"Look, I know... this might be weird coming from me, but... I'm sorry I looked down on you growing up," she continued. "And I'm sorry I didn't thank you properly for saving me. That was disgusting of me, and I accept that."

Jared didn't say a word; instead, he simply listened to her.

"I didn't mean any of the mean things I said. It's just I wanted you to be better than the chief so you could rule the village one day. I let it all get to my head, and I ended up doing some stupid things. But I see now that you are capable. I mean, even the goddess supports you. I admit, you are far better than I expected."

She stole a glance at him, and then she noticed the weird smile on his face.

No, it wasn't weird. He was definitely mocking her.

"You look to be enjoying yourself, Lord Jared..." she spat with growing venom.

"Whatever are you talking about? I'm listening to every word. Keep going..." Jared leaned forward, the smile growing even wider on his face.

[The god of information wants you to have sex with this person.]

'The hell?...'

"I'm being honest, and you're mocking me," Kiara muttered with her fist clenched. It seemed as if she were about to burst with rage, but then all of a sudden, she took a deep breath.

"I came here for a request..." she hinted.

Ignoring the notifications, Jared focused on Kiara.

"And what might that be?" he uttered while shoving the shovel into the ground repeatedly.

"I wish to stay by your side forever."

"Sorry? Did you plan on leaving somewhere before?"

"No, I didn't..." Kiara was slightly irritated at his question. "I mean I want to be with you forever."

Carrying a robotic look, Jared tilted his head to the side, clearly not understanding what she meant.

Until—

"I want us to get married!!!" she yelled, so loud that everyone on the field paused to look at them.

"Marriage?"

"They want to get married?"

The rumors ran rampant on the field.

Jared, on the other hand, didn't seem all that moved about it, and at the same time, didn't seem as if he were unmoved either.

"You want us to get married?" he asked back.

"Yes, that's what I said. Is that... weird?" Kiara blushed, playing with her hair while she looked to the side.

"Weird, no; shocking, yes. Why the sudden need to get married to me? Last I checked, the only reason we got engaged to begin with was because my father forced us."

"I... know..."

"So is there something that's making you decide you want to try marriage out of the blue? Because I can promise you, it's nothing like—"

"It's because you kissed me! I've been thinking about it ever since! So take responsibility for it, ahhhh!" Kiara screamed, almost as if letting out frustration.

Caught off guard, Jared barely had time to understand what was going on when Kiara stormed closer, her face beet red and finger pointed at him.

"You took my first kiss. So you have to marry me. It's the rules, and you know it."
