Chapter 44: A man who sees.

The next morning, Jared and Lucy went back to the village’s main kitchen.

Here, the newly added meat they had hunted was carved into small pieces by the women.

In order for them not to waste food and also maintain their ration, the woman in charge of handling the kitchen, Grandma Chen, had them slice up the meat into small containers.

No more than three containers of meat were to be used a day. And of course, no one argued with her; it was for their own good.

Anyway, Jared watched as the women all began to gather the containers into one side of the room, while the men were busy trying to push the freezer closer to where the kitchen was.

There were five in total, each one twice as big as the kitchen itself.

It was so massive that about three buffaloes could fit into it.

Which was exactly what Jared wanted.

Pointing towards one of the villagers, he wiggled his finger, urging the man to move closer.

The man obeyed, leaving his peers to handle the lifting while he went to attend to his chief.

"My lord, you called for me," the man uttered with a genuine smile on his face.

The man was short, reaching only to Jared’s chest, his eyes so big it was almost possible to see the tiny particles in his pupils.

Dirty and rough, the man still looked happy to be in the presence of Jared.

"I heard from Lucy that you know more about the village ground than most people. Is that true?" asked Jared.

Lucy nodded her head behind him, affirming the fact that she did say so.

"I wouldn’t say so, please; you flatter me, your lordship."

’Your lordship? Every day the name-calling just gets worse; the other day I could have sworn someone called me Papa. Are these people rage-baiting me?’

Jared thought to himself as he stared down at the man.

The question wasn’t worth asking, so he quickly dismissed it and focused back on the topic at hand.

"You do know about the land, don’t you?"

"Yes, I do. The late chief and I worked on the mapping a long time ago."

’Perfect.’

Jared didn’t know much about the land Sikone village had. All he knew was it was vast, with a large watering hole and a hunting ground that no longer belonged to them.

As you would guess, his former self was quite lazy and didn’t really try to learn more about the village.

"You’re just the person I need. Do you mind telling me where our village ends and where it stops?"

The man looked confused at Jared’s questions. Was the chief of Sikone village really asking him such an ignorant question?

Even kids in the village are knowledgeable to that extent.

Pow!

The best conclusion the man could come up with was Lord Jared was simply trying to test him.

"Ohhh! I won’t let you down, My Messiah... Please, come with me." The man began to head towards the far mountains.

’Messiah?’

[The god of information mocks you for the titles you’ve been given.]

[The god of loyalty finds it funny.]

Jared was genuinely tired of the names, as seen with how he casually twitched his eyebrow before following the man.

Ignoring his self-killing irritation, Jared followed the willing man further down the mountain. As always, Lucy followed.

One thing he didn’t expect was for them to actually climb the mountain that looked like it was trying to touch the heavens.

It took some minutes for them to get to the top of the mountain—for Jared, hours.

"This is where your father and I drew the map...from the top of this mountain, where we could see everything..." announced the man as he took slow steps forward.

Jared, on the other hand, was already on his knees from exhaustion, Lucy gently petting his back to calm him down.

"You drew...the village map?" Jared asked, too exhausted to make any type of expression.

"Yes, my lord..."

’I should have just asked for the map rather than doing all this. Sigh! Well, it’s not to its own waste; seeing it with my own eyes works best too.’

Now standing to his feet, Jared walked past the man and towards the edge of the mountain, where he could see everything from within Sikone village, outside.

Trees and hills stretched wide, mimicking the pattern of the flowing river that networked its way towards the southern part of the village.

Staring at the view from the mountaintop, Jared could finally grasp the reason his father was so protective of the village.

It didn’t look like much, at least not from an outlandish viewpoint.

But the very atmosphere and scenery—it was magical.

Almost like he had the heavens in his palms, waiting for whatever changes he could make.

He could see where the village ended and where it began.

The forest all belonged to them.

The beautiful rivers were theirs.

The land that stretched far and beyond had no other owner other than the people who belonged to the Sikone community.

After land that never ends was Ragoon village, and then after, the fourth successful land in all the northern regions.

Jared had heard stories about the place from his father but never really saw it with his own two eyes.

All this... belonged to him.

"Honestly... The things I do for these people..." Jared muttered under his breath, one hand resting on his waist while he stared at the view before him.

"Lord Jared?" Lucy called out.

He had been standing there quietly for some time, and it only got even more awkward with every passing moment. Lucy couldn’t help but call out.

Suddenly, Jared turned around to face her.

He didn’t need to say much for them to understand he already had yet another idea in his head.

The look of utter knowledge had hugged his features the moment he understood the land he owned.

"Tell me, have you ever heard of a tractor?" he asked ever so calmly.
