Chapter 43: A woman and her lord.

Later that very day, Lucy and the rest made their way back to the village.

But it wasn’t by foot as they did when they left. No, they returned with the two horses and four wagons the scavengers used.

Basically, they stole them from them.

The boss and the few of the scavengers that were alive had to use their two legs to head back to their territory.

Reaching the village, as expected, everyone was excited at the fact the hunt was successful.

Having six buffaloes was like a blessing, so much so, people began to worry if they were overusing it.

While Kiara was attending to them, Lucy made her way to Jared’s room.

Kneeling in front of the door, she took a deep breath before saying anything.

She heard from one of the villagers that since Jared stepped into the room, he had not stepped out. Not even to eat or drink water.

"Good afternoon, Lord Jared... Are you alright in there?" Her voice was loud enough for anyone within range to hear.

Alas, not a single reply came from the room.

A disappointed expression didn’t waste time on Lucy’s features.

’I knew it. He is still busy... hmmmm~ and I wanted to show him the letter too. Wait....what if he is asleep? Yes, he might be sleeping; he always seems to overwork himself... he probably just fell asleep without knowing.’

The bit of hope she gathered vanished almost instantly.

’There’s no way he would be sleeping for that long.’ Lucy couldn’t hide her sadness, ’I just want to talk to him. Eh? Why do I want to talk to him this badly though? I’ll see him tomorrow; it doesn’t have to be now...’

She paused...

Realization hitting her as she flinched a bit, her eyes going dim.

’Could it be because I want him to praise me for what I did to those scavengers? Eh? Yah yah yah, that can’t be it, right? No, it most definitely isn’t...’

It didn’t take long for her face to turn red, almost steaming.

’I...can’t...lie. I kinda do want to do that. Ugh~ what am I, a kid? Sigh!’

Lucy stood to her feet, staring at the door for a while.

Leaving was an option; she could always come back later, most likely when Jared decides he wants to step out of his room.

Then again...

Lucy didn’t seem like she could help herself.

"Excuse me..." She announced before opening the door.

The moment she stepped into the room, she ran into Jared standing at the center of the room.

"Uhn..." He muttered a bit.

Lucy finally got a good look at him.

His hair was scattered, bags were under his eyes, proving he hadn’t slept and was exhausted. Jared’s lips were also chapped, and his skin looked even paler.

"Oh Lucy, you’re back from your hunting? How did it go?"

Jared asked, right after placing a carton box on the side of the room.

It was then Lucy caught a glimpse of the multiple strange machine boxes at the corner of the room along with weird huge rectangular items.

Being from a fantasy world, it was no wonder she didn’t know what a solar panel and inverter looked like.

"Lord Jared... what are those?" She asked, her curiosity getting the better of her.

"Solutions to the meat rotting. With these, we should be able to...."

Before Jared even knew what was happening, he had collapsed to the ground after losing his footing.

"Lord Jared!"

No one worries about a king more than his knight.

Lucy hastily went to his aid.

While he was lying on the ground, too tired to stand up, she managed to raise his head and place it on her lap.

"Are you alright? You fell down pretty hard just now..." She rubbed her hand on his cheeks and body, checking if he was truly alright.

Since Jared had been in the room, he had been trying to think of ways he could preserve the meat rotting issue.

Using a freezer was the best he could come up with, and since using electricity in a way that would power a freezer was beyond him, he decided it was best if he got an inverter instead, one powerful enough to carry a freezer.

Finding the inverter wasn’t an issue, not until he saw the prices.

As such, Jared needed to generate more money, to which he did by completing weird requests from the gods who were observing him, in order to get some donations.

Some were outright horrendous, but Jared was sure to pick only the ones he knew would save his pride.

Doing 500 pushups for over a day was enough to not only weaken his bones but also make him dead inside. And that was only a single request out of the others he got.

Now resting his head on Lucy’s perfectly soft thighs, he couldn’t help but carry a smile on his face, something he assumed he had already lost.

"This is nice...." He blurted out, his eyes closed.

"I asked if you were alright..." Lucy chuckled a bit, now rubbing his hair with her other hand on his belly.

"I guess I can worry about that later. For now, you need to rest. I’ll stay here until you fall asleep."

"Aren’t you... acting too much like a... wife..." Jared murmured, clearly falling asleep.

Something about what he said not only made Lucy’s heart race, but also made her think about it.

What if she was the one to marry Jared?

Was there ever any chance she would be lucky enough to have such a selfish wish?

’Be careful what you say...every word you say to me holds deep meaning.’

Lucy sighed, but still, that smile never left her lips.

Even as she rubbed his soft lips with her fingers, wanting to kiss them while he was asleep.

Would that be wrong?

She pulled closer, her lips almost nearing his. And then, at the last second, she kissed his forehead.

The moment she pulled away, her cheeks were completely red, eyes widened in fear.

’I’m going to die~~~!!!’
