Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse-Chapter 49: Finally Getting Some News
Chapter 49: Chapter 49: Finally Getting Some News
"You don’t have to worry. We bought enough food and water to last us for a while. Meanwhile, we will observe the situation and make decisions depending on our circumstances.
There is no internet at the moment, which means we can’t get news in real time like before. But...Lu Tao, are you done eating?" Leng Pan started to talk about their immediate plans, then an idea struck her.
They couldn’t watch news or get information through the internet like they are used to, but what if the analog TV still worked?
"Sister-in-law, what do you need me to do?" Lu Tao immediately stood up and waited for Leng Pan to instruct him.
He knew that his sister-in-law was the person his brother cared about the most in the world, so he couldn’t afford to slight her. Otherwise, his brother would skin him alive.
"Go to the store room and get the aerial there, then help your brother connect it to the TV. We might not be able to watch news on our phones, but isn’t there the old-fashioned way?
Just watch analog TV using aerial instead of the internet." Leng Pan said as she instructed Lu Tao on what to do.
She had seen the aerial in Lu Zhen’s store room before. When she asked why it was there, he said that it came with the TV, but since the smart TV used the internet, that aerial was useless.
However, now the thing that was deemed as useless had found its use. She hoped that the TV presenters and reporters were still working.
She hadn’t anticipated the apocalypse starting with such a bang! It was supposed to be gradual with the rains going for over a month, floods covering buildings, people drowning, and some viruses breaking out, which would lead to mutations and the emergence of zombies.
That was what the book detailed. But here they were, awakening their superpowers the first night, which means there were zombies in some places as well. There was no way superpowers would awaken and zombies wouldn’t appear.
She just hoped that the situation wasn’t too bad.
Lu Tao found the aerial and found a metal pole from the store then fixed the aerial on it. Walking out with the pole and the aerial dangling on it, Lu Zhen got up and walked to him, taking the pole from him, he headed to the balcony.
"Find a wire or rope we can use to tie the pole to a pillar to keep it straight." Lu Zhen ordered his younger brother when he got to the balcony and realized that there wasn’t any place to fix the aerial the way it was.
"Okay, I’ll go get it." Lu Tao agreed readily and ran back to the store room.
He came back out with a binding wire and handed it over to his brother.
"Hold the pole against the pillar, I’ll tie it up." Lu Zhen said as he took the binding wire and left the aerial pole to his brother.
This was the first time he was doing something like this, but it was just a matter of using common sense so he didn’t find it difficult.
After a few minutes, everything was in place. He went back to the store room to look for the cable that connects the TV to the aerial and came back with a ten meters cable.
Passing it through a ventilation hole near the roof, he pulled the cable from the living room to the balcony and screwed it to the aerial.
After he was done, he went back inside and hooked the other end to the port at the back of the television. Once this was done. He switched on the TV and clear images appeared on the screen.
Just as Leng Pan had expected, the internet wasn’t working, but the television stations were broadcasting news. Even without the internet, it looked like these TV stations had other channels to pass news in real time.
They selected a national channel and the family sat down on the living room sofa facing the television to watch what was happening.
The reporters collecting news in various parts of the world reported millions of casualties resulting from last night’s meteorite shower. Some places were fortunate as the meteors fell on empty spaces while others were unlucky as highly populated places were caught off guard and many people perished under the rocks and crumbling buildings.
One reporter reported the demise of the president of Country F as a large meteor had fallen in his reception room where he was entertaining guests.
In short, the world was in chaos. As if that was not enough, sporadic news of people behaving like rabies patients and biting others also started to spread.
It was said that those who were bitten would also catch the virus and bite others. People were advised to lock or tie their family members who showed signs of this disease to control its spreading.
Leng Pan thought that it’s just as she had expected. Zombies had started to appear. It’s just that people had not realized that they were dealing with zombies and thought that these people had rabies or a similar contagious disease.
She hoped that the authorities would realize sooner that they couldn’t treat these people and eliminate them instead of waiting for them to infect more people.
Everyone in the living room watched with horror as one of the cameras caught a woman pouncing on her husband and taking a bite at his neck. The husband seemed to love her too much and couldn’t bear to hurt her, so he let her bite him.
However, a few minutes later, his eyes became unfocused and he too started looking for people to bite.
The reporter who caught this scene was shocked and almost got himself bitten. Luckily, his colleague grabbed him and dragged him to run. Only then did he come back to his senses and speak with a trembling voice once they were at a safe distance.
