Chapter 53: Countless Possibilities

Countless pairs of eyes, both big and small, silently stared at him from beyond the shadowy veil.

Abel’s heart skipped a beat and his knees buckled. He fell to the ground, subconsciously retreating away from the wall in absolute fear.

His breathing grew ragged, and his heartbeat sped up. He quickly covered his mouth, afraid that he would let slip a cry and draw even more attention to himself.

He couldn’t help but gulp loudly, thinking to himself in shock and horror, Just what the hell are those things?!

Those eyes... There are so many of them!

Whom do they belong to?! No... do they even belong to someone in the first place?

Just what are they? They... They’re alive!

White sclera. Gray Iris. Black pupil. All eyes shared the same characteristics.

Some eyes were as big as Abel’s, while others were bigger than the whole townhouse that he currently had a flat in.

However, there was one thing that he was able to notice despite the immense fear and panic overwhelming him.

It was that these countless eyes gazed at him without an ounce of emotion flickering in them.

There was neither hostility nor any goodwill.

They silently watched. That was all.

Realizing this, Abel slowly lowered his hand from his mouth and rose to his feet. He fearfully gazed at the countless eyeballs gazing back at him.

Soon, his fear was gradually replaced by curiosity.

Before he knew it, he found himself walking towards the wall of the tunnel again. He placed his shaky hand on the shadowy curtain that separated him from the eyes.

It was cold to the touch. It felt tangible and gaseous at the same time. It was a bizarre feeling.

What are these... eyes? What’s their origin? What’s their... purpose?

Just as he was thinking about the possible origins of these eyes, something caught his attention at the corner of his sight.

He stretched his hand in that direction, allowing the lantern to illuminate the area in front.

And there it was...

A door!

Finally! Abel’s eyes lit up and he felt like he could cry tears of joy.

Without hesitation, he rushed to the wooden door—the only thing that was not black in this pitch-black tunnel.

Arriving before the door, he placed his hand on the knob. But before he twisted it and opened the door, he cast his gaze once again at the wall of this mysterious dark tunnel.

He gazed at the countless gray eyes still looking at him from beyond the shadowy curtain.

Abel deeply looked at these eyes before finally opening the door and entering the room.

The dark tunnel once again returned to complete silence and darkness.

And the eyes behind the walls continued to observe everything and nothing for the rest of time.

Meanwhile, after Abel entered the room behind the door, he found himself in a completely unfamiliar place.

He couldn’t help but curse under his breath.

"Fuck! Now what?"

This was a bedroom, vastly different from his.

There was a large bed that occupied one side, a cupboard that occupied another, a seating area, and finally a mirror mounted upon one of the walls.

The mirror, yes, that was his way out of this dimension!

The moment his eyes landed on the mirror, a bold thought appeared inside his mind.

And there was only one way to confirm his speculation,

He took a deep breath and walked towards the mirror. Then, without hesitation, he put his face through the reflective surface.

...

On the other side of the mirror, in the real world, the bedroom was empty. However, there were some faint sounds of conversation coming from outside the door.

There were still people around, just not inside the bedroom.

Suddenly, ripples started to form on the surface of the mirror, and Abel’s face emerged!

He looked around the bedroom, it was the same as the one the rest of his body was currently in—back in the mirror world.

His ears perked up and he turned his head towards the entrance of the bedroom.

There are people here! He thought.

In that split second, he came to a decision. He quickly climbed out of the mirror and landed on the ground with a soft thud.

"Hmm?"

"Darling, did you hear that?"

"Wait here, I’ll go and check."

Then came the sound of footsteps approaching the bedroom. Abel’s eyes widened and he rushed towards the window, trying to make as little sound as possible.

Seeing the scenery outside, he breathed a sigh of relief because the room was situated on the first floor. He quickly opened the window and jumped!

Right at that moment, the door to the bedroom opened and a brown-haired middle aged man entered. He looked around the room with a frown on his face.

He was sure that he’d heard something. However, the room was empty.

His gaze was then drawn to the window, and his narrowed. "Did you leave the window open?"

"No, dear, I did not!" Came the voice of a woman from outside.

"Huh." the man walked towards the window, stuck his head out, and looked around.

But he found no one.

"Strange..." he muttered under his breath and shut the window. Then he returned to his family dining in the main hall.

...

The moment Abel heard the man shut the window, he peeked his head out from the corner of the building.

He was currently in the backyard of this townhouse residential building, looking around in absolute shock.

"This... is definitely not my building!" He exclaimed.

His heartbeat sped up as he quickly entered the building from the back entrance. With hurried steps, he quickly walked past the staircase and arrived at the front entrance of the building.

Fuck!

He cursed when he saw a bunch of old men sitting outside the main gate of the building, smoking from their pipes and chatting with one another about old times.

Okay, calm down. Calm down. Act normal.

With slow and steady steps, he walked towards the group of old men. "Good evening, gentlemen." He greeted them with a smile and walked past them.

One step.

Two steps.

Three steps.

"Hey, you!" One of the old men called out to him, his eyes flickering with suspicion. "Who are you, boy? I’ve never seen you here before!"

Fuck! Abel cursed.

He turned around, adjusted the flat cap just enough to hide his face, and replied with a smile.

"My name is Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus!"

The old men were flabbergasted at Abel’s response.

"Marcus... what?"

"What were you doing inside the building?"

"Young man, you are suspicious!"

"Stop right there!"
