Chapter 107: All the stories

A chill ran down Severin’s spine because he couldn’t figure out what the thing in front of him really was. A monster? A beast of some kind?

A human?

Severin reminded himself that he didn’t know anything about the place, and the monkey man must have come to him specifically for a reason.

His eyes still didn’t leave him. "Then, what if I have no stories to tell?"

His eyes narrowed, and the golden red fur on the monkey man bristled. "But you must. Everyone has a story to tell. Besides, you’re new here, aren’t you?"

Severin stiffened, and his eyes narrowed, his body ready to leap into action immediately. "What are you talking about?"

"You don’t recognize me. But you should, especially when I talked about stories. You don’t recognize, you don’t know me, you are new here!"

The monkey man walked forward and then bent down, his reddish eyes on him. "A new person. Now that’s something. The last new person we had didn’t get to meet me. All those stories."

"If you’ve heard all stories, then there must be nothing I can tell you."

"True. If you were normal, but I sense an overlapping within you. You have stories."

Severin kept quiet. Overlapping? Could he be referring to the fact that I came from another world? How did he figure something like that out with just a glance?

Severin blinked. He realized how dangerous things really were if the first thing he met already told him his true nature. "What do you do with the stories you hear?"

Severin wanted to know as much as he could about the other person. It might be the thing to save his life later. The monkey man leaned closer. "Everyone knows that it’s the source of my powers. I devour the stories and weave them as I would."

"Your powers?"

"Yes. The more the world accepts and hears, the more people believe in such a story, the more power I get from it."

"That’s an interesting power."

"It is. But what happens once that kind of power devours all the stories in the world? The power regresses! I was once one of the undisputed Lords here, but now I have to hunt little creatures to eat. Do you know how embarrassing it is?"

Severin nodded his head. His face was calm, but inside he was having a really bad feeling. The monkey man was talking too much for people who had just met.

That could only mean that the monkey man already had plans for him. Either to kill him or use him for something else, Severin couldn’t detect for now. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

The monkey man kept silent and just stared at him. "How about this? I will be your guide in this place, and you will tell me stories."

Severin raised his brows. "Which place?"

The monkey man smiled. "Ah! I will be your guide in this new world you found yourself in."

Severin shook his head. "My guide in the whole of Sector Delta, and you won’t harm me, directly or indirectly. I will give you five stories for that."

The monkey man’s eyes shuddered, his face twisted, and an overwhelming aura ripped out of him and slammed into Severin. "You? You fragile thing dare to make a deal with me? I will string you up and get the stories from you!"

Severin held his throat; he felt as if something was wrapped around it, slowly choking the air from him. His eyes popped, but still he didn’t back away. "My guess is that you must get the stories voluntarily!"

Immediately, the power disappeared and left Severin breathing hard on the ground.

The monkey man growled. "I hate talking with people who use their brains."

Severin thought fast.

He didn’t want to let go of the opportunity. Although the monkey man was problematic, at least he didn’t try to eat him immediately and wanted something from him.

Severin wanted to use that. He knew, to some extent, what the monkey man wanted; that was better than not knowing anything. At least now he knew from where he would look at things!

Severin raised his head. "I’ll give you a bonus. There’s this story. It’s popular in a continent. It’s the story of a trickster spider.

"Anansi, the clever spider, wanted all the world’s wisdom for himself. He asked Nyame, the sky god, for it. Nyame agreed but demanded a high price: Anansi had to capture four dangerous creatures, the hornets, the python, the leopard, and the fairy Mmoatia."

When Severin started speaking, the monkey man went absolutely still like a stone statue. His eyes focused on Severin immediately, and as he spoke, Severin realized that white smoke was coming out of his mouth with each word, entering into the monkey man’s mouth.

"Using his wit, Anansi tricked each creature. He trapped the hornets in a gourd by pretending it was raining, convinced the python to tie itself in knots to prove its length, lured the leopard into a pit with a fake feast, and caught the fairy by tempting her with her favorite food."

Something strange was happening to the monkey man as he continued the story. Sparks flew by its fur, and its form began to twist as if he would shed his skin.

"Nyame, impressed, gave Anansi a pot containing all the world’s wisdom. But Anansi grew selfish and decided to hide the pot in a tall tree so no one else could use it. He tied the pot to his belly and began climbing, but the pot kept slipping, slowing him down.

"His son, watching from below, shouted, ’Father, tie the pot to your back instead!’ Anansi realized his son’s advice was wiser than his own plan. In frustration, he threw the pot down, and it shattered, scattering wisdom across the world for everyone to share. And that’s it."

Severin ended, the last smoke entering into the monkey man, but by then Severin didn’t know if he could still call him the monkey man.

A shadow loomed over him; a large spider with the torso of a man was now standing in front of him. And in his right hand was a pot.
