Chapter 48: The lake

This next ’hall’ confused Lumen as he had already deduced the pattern that this area was following and was 99% sure that the third hall would be something like a fully intact and decorated hall or something like that.

Instead it resembled the familiar looking environment of the cave that he had spent the last 2 weeks exploring, except for the fact that this hall was filled to the brim with water that upon inspecting, seemed to be bottomless...

He focused his gaze and scanned the area as he spotted a few parts of the floor of this underwater lake that weren’t underwater as there were several platform like rocks dotted about, starting at the entrance to the hall.

He took a closer look at these platforms and concluded that they extended all the way to the other end of the lake, with three identical rows in total sitting only a metre apart from each other.

His worst fears had been realised...

’F*ck, why does this hall have to be a trial of luck??’

His skill and experience wouldn’t help him at all in this place as there was nothing he could do in his power to manipulate luck to his favour.

Clearly this challenge was about stepping stones to arrive at the other side. And if he guessed correctly, then if he steps on the wrong one, he would fall into the abyss of water below him that seemed to have no bottom...

The platforms were big enough for one person to stand on but not big enough to have any sort of manoeuvrability.

Taking extra measures to ensure his safety, Lumen chose to test the waters next, simply plunging his wrist into the waters.

However as soon as his hand entered the water a terrifying sense of impending doom and dread washed over him as fear pervaded his entire body. Waves of weakness spread through him as he instinctively knew that as soon as his body comes in contact with the water, he lost all ability to swim and would simply sink down into the abyss, left to drown...

Thankfully he decided to just plunge his wrist in it a little from the shore at the entrance as he immediately jerked back up and started hyperventilating massively when he was finally free from the dreaded water.

The reality of the situation just dawned upon him as he was now faced with the consequences of making the wrong choice or miss stepping a little bit. With the small size of the stone platforms, even if he slipped just a tiny bit when jumping between them he would end up in the bottomless lake.

’Focus, Lumen, calm down!’

He had to just stand there leaning up against the wall of the hallway calming himself down, he had never felt such a terrifying feeling ever in his life before. Not even his fight with the Elite wolf or the level 13 deer made him feel such deep rooted terror as just dipping his hand in this lake did. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

Suppressing his desire to just run straight back through this entire area, he finally stepped up to the first set of stepping stones, ready to take the plunge.

’A 33% chance of success on the first try, and that percentage will only exponentially decrease the further I go along... F*ck my life.’

Lumen looked towards the end of the lake, and although he knew it was drastically smaller than the other halls, down from 500 metres to only 100 metres, he still counted a total of 50 rows of stepping stones before the exit.

He didn’t even bother calculating the odds of him managing to get every single decision right as the chance was so low that it may as well be 0%. He would need some heavenly luck or just be a god if he wanted to achieve such odds in real life.

His only option of getting through this hall was jumping from platform to platform, and he finally made the decision to randomly pick the middle stone out of the three and jumped onto it from the 2 metre distance from the shore.

His eyes were entirely focused on landing on the stone as he needed to get his landing perfect with how narrow they were.

’So many things to worry about at once, f*ck this place!’

As his feet were planted evenly on the stone platform beneath his feet, he hoped and prayed that it didn’t sink beneath his feet.

He waited in silence with his eyes closed and face muscles squinted to the maximum as nothing happened for five seconds. Finally opening his eyes, he looked below him to find that the stone was still there in the same spot it had always been, somehow rooted to that spot in the water not even moving with the faint waves of the water.

’YESSSS!!’

Surviving the first jump, he knew he had a long process of trial and error before him and unfortunately his only decision making process for this was to just randomly pick a stone and hope to god that it was the right one.

He didn’t want to lose any momentum from his previous success and didn’t waste any time in jumping from his current stone to the left most stone on the second row in front of him.

His body left the ground once again as he took another leap of faith towards the stone below him. This time having some semblance of confidence in him.

But as his feet neared the ground, the usual feeling of his feet touching the cold and wet stone didn’t arrive as he looked down in shock and horror to see that his body had completely phased through the rock like it wasn’t even there, like a hologram.

In no time, his feet had made contact with the cold water as the same sense of dread and impending doom washed over him once again. But due to his fight and flight response being activated and his body still pumped with adrenaline, his body acted by itself instinctively to reach for the nearest stone to him directly to his right only a metre away.

His thoughts were encompassed in the terrifying consequences of falling into the water, so the though that even that stone may be the wrong one didn’t occur to him as he just leapt for his life towards it.

He ended up clutching onto the familiar feeling of cold rock as his entire lower body was left submerged in the lake.
