Chapter 47: Trials and tribulations

Lumen threw aside his fear of the environment doing everything it could possibly do to try and kill him. In place of this fear, courage came as he decided to go over to the now wrecked site where the black spike had penetrated and exploded in the floor.

But before he could examine the situation properly, another spike came flying right at him. Unlike the first time, Lumen expected this one and easily dodged it. At his current level he had gained something almost like a sixth sense and could sense incoming attacks before any of his other five senses could detect them. It was really a lifesaver in this case.

This was how he justified himself walking into this hall that clearly was filled with traps put there with the purpose of killing any intruders. But he got what he wanted eventually as the second spike gave him the general direction of where the spikes were coming from. He followed that trail and eventually came to a basketball sized hole in the wall.

But he noticed that as he approached the hole in the wall, it suddenly closed as if it detected that he had come close, and upon further inspection he found that the entire wall in front of him was riddled with many holes like the first one he spotted.

He did a few more tests and found that only certain traps were triggered the further along he went into the hall, and as long as he kept up his senses to the maximum and dodged any incoming spikes, then he could make it to the other side where another exit stood. He considered himself lucky that the wall didn’t have a mechanism to launch all black spikes at once, or he would be screwed...

After a bit of hyping himself up, he felt confident enough to make a run for the exit about 500 metres on the other side of the large hall. Sprinting forth, he dodged every spike that came after him as more and more holes appeared on the wall to his left and launched a spike every now and then. Explosions rattled behind him as he kept his focus on the exit, not wanting to be distracted by anything lest he wanted to end up impaled on a spear.

Soon, he passed a line of completely intact marble pillars that he deemed to be the midway point of the hall as only a dozen or so seconds had passed since he had started his sprint. His confidence in reaching the exit in one piece kept rising as he gained more and more distance from his starting point.

But to his sudden surprise, when he passed the row of pillars at the midway point, even more holes opened up on them and he was met with a new barrage of spikes that now came not only from his left side, but also behind him too.

Not expecting this, he was caught off guard and was surrounded by incoming spikes from both sides. Knowing he couldn’t keep up his momentum while dodging them, he made the emergency decision to throw himself to the ground before they could hit him as they passed over him less than a second before he had even made contact with the ground, managing to swiftly roll away from the explosion radius as now he was surrounded by exploding spikes from all angles.

’F*ck! F*ck! F*ck!, what is this unfair treatment??’ He yelled both verbally and mentally in a desperate scramble back to his feet.

A moment of respite was given to him as he landed back on his feet though as another barrage from the pillars behind him wasn’t in sight yet, and not wanting to miss perhaps the only opportunity he would get to escape this perilous situation, he kept running as he neared within 50 metres of the exit now.

Another distant sound of the air being split apart by fast moving sharp objects came from behind him as he continued his desperate sprint towards the exit, knowing that the fast approaching spikes were closing in on him rapidly.

20 metres....

15 metres....

11 metres....

5 metres....

2 metres....

By the time he had reached 2 metres, the spikes had caught up to him and landed on the ground right behind him, exploding a moment later as Lumen was caught up in the explosion of over a dozen spikes exploding all at once.

He was launched over a dozen metres by the explosion far past the exit of the hall as he landed inside another hallway. To his annoyance, he hadn’t managed to make it through the hall unscathed as his body and clothes were covered in scorch marks and burns, along with the odd bruise or two as he gulped down a health potion.

Calmness returned to the atmosphere surrounding him as all sounds of explosions stopped and he could finally sigh with relief at making it through that hall alive.

’What a sh*tty dungeon.... If it weren’t for my abnormal stats for my level I wouldn’t have made it through that hall alive, or at the very least left me severely injured. What kind of dungeon with a level 10 limit has an area like this requiring such extreme methods to survive?’

His thoughts only reaffirmed his theory that this place was not normal at all, thinking that there must be something valuable at the end of this to make all the pain and fear worth it.

A single one of those spikes penetrated that hard and thick marble floor like butter and even turned it to dust when they exploded, if he were even a few metres closer to the explosion there probably wouldn’t be anything tangible left of his body...

Standing in the clearing of the new hallway, he inspected it thoroughly as he could never trust this trap filled area to give him a moment of peace.

But fortunately for him there was nothing like that and it seemed to be just another ordinary hallway.

’At least this place still has a sense of fairness to it...’

He proceeded through the hallway at a steady pace, half expecting another hall like the last two with some changes to it as the pattern between them was obvious, but as he got to the end he met a hall like no other, or more rather a lake!
