Chapter 31: First Flight

The wind howled past Adam’s ears as he soared through the sky, his black-feathered wings beating in rhythm with the currents. The initial rush of takeoff had been exhilarating, but now came the real challenge....actually flying with control.

"Shit, this ain’t as easy as I thought!"

Adam grunted, his body lurching forward as a strong gust nearly flipped him mid-air. He flapped harder, trying to stabilize, but the more force he exerted, the shakier he became.

Minerva wasn’t lying, flying ain’t just about having wings; it was about control, balance, and reading the air. If even a harpy needed time to master this, then he sure as hell wasn’t gonna get it perfect right away, well that’s what he would say if he wasn’t built differently.

But still... he wasn’t gonna let this body go to waste.

Tch... gotta use my brain... How did I mess up?

He steadied himself, taking a deep breath as he adjusted his posture. His wings stretched out fully, catching the wind like sails rather than fighting against it. It was less about brute force and more about finesse.

He had studied how the Black Wing Clan harpies manipulated air resistance, a natural ability that let them glide effortlessly. By using magic to alter his genetics, he could mimic their flight techniques, essentially coding his wings and body to function like theirs to some extent.

Now, all that was left was applying the right spirit language and elemental affinity to refine the spell’s effectiveness and enhance his biological functions.

It was going to cost a good amount of Astrum, but that was the least of his concerns, his initial reserve was quite large, given his Astrum absorption rate was extremely fast to boot.

With that in mind, he got to work.

The magic circles within his body began reconfiguring, adjusting his internal structure for better speed, balance, and air resistance, essential fundamentals for smoother flight. While he hadn’t mastered advanced spirit language yet, he had learned enough of the basics to operate at an intermediate level as a spiritualist for a beginner level.

After all, through sheer hard work and relentless training, he could learn and grasp things faster than anyone else in this world. His efforts would never betray him, that was the unique trait of a Shinso human: perseverance taken to its absolute limit.

He embodied the very idea that pain only made you stronger, that near-death experiences forged something even greater. For him, suffering was never the end...just the first step toward something far beyond greatness.

And after the reconfiguration.

"Alright, that should do it... I hope I didn’t code it wrong, but this should make things easier for me."

The moment he stopped flapping so aggressively and instead let the wind do some of the work, his movements became smoother. He banked slightly to the right, adjusting the angle of his wings to steer, then tested a small flap to gain altitude.

"YESSS HAHAHA.... IT WORKED!!"

Adam said excitedly.

As such he began to repeat the same motion, glide with the wing and make the wind carry him, and flap to gain altitude.

He did this for twenty minutes straight training himself till eventually he got the simple logic of flying down perfectly.

"Hah! Not bad, huh?"

Adam smirked to himself, confidence rising as he rode the air currents. The Paffora Forest stretched below him, an endless sea of dense and old trees, like giant lighthouses, and Priscilla was right, the miasma in this place was off the charts, so much so, that the entire place felt ominous making sensing danger close to impossible.

He could see rivers cutting through the land, winding paths barely visible beneath the thick canopy, but all things considered, this was a perfect training ground for learning how to fly.

Seeing this he could not help but think.

"Now, let’s see if I can speed up without crashing."

Said Adam.

As he angled himself forward, tucking his wings slightly. His body leaned into the dive, and instantly, he felt the acceleration. Wind pressure built against his face, his heart pounded, and his blood surged with excitement. His speed increased rapidly, but the moment he tried to pull up, his wings caught the force unevenly.

"SHHHHHIIIIITTTTT!!....

He screamed in panic.

Losing control, he spiraled downward, his body twisting as he desperately fought to stabilize himself. Trees zoomed closer. If he didn’t fix this now, he was gonna be a pancake on the forest floor.

Adam snapped his wings open wide, forcing himself into a sudden glide. The jolt nearly dislocated his shoulders, but it worked, his descent slowed, and he barely managed to skim the treetops, leaves brushing against his boots as he steadied his flight.

"Hah... hah... okay, that was close."

Adam panted, shaking the tension out of his arms.

"Sigh... by the looks of it, I ain’t going be going supersonic just yet... that would probably kill me if I tried given my current level, I need better control before I even think of doing that."

Adam clutched his chest, his heart pounding in panic. This was his first time truly flying, yesterday had just been about getting the hang of gliding and summoning his wings more quickly. He had taken a beating, crashing over and over, but through sheer persistence, he had managed. Now, with practice, he could summon his wings in just four seconds after dismissing them.

Taking a deep breath, he rose higher again, this time at a steadier pace. Flying was an art, and like any skill, it needed practice before it could be refined into something smooth and effortless. But despite the near-death scare, the rush of it all only thrilled him more. A wild grin spread across his face, determination burning in his eyes.

"Alright... round two."

He said, clearly having fun, hell normal humans on Earth did not get to do awesome shit like this.

With that, he shot upward again, pushing his speed. This time, he was more controlled, adjusting as he climbed. He capped out at around 288 MPH...fast, but not reckless. The faster he went, the more Astrum he burned, so he had to be smart about how he used his energy as Priscilla instructed him. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com

For about another thirty minutes, Adam took the Sky of the Paffora Forest as his playground, training himself on how to be a better flyer.
