Khalifa: Queen in the Apocalypse-Chapter 198: The Betrayer
Hugo and Kylo looked at each other and analyzed, trying to determine who the suspects were.
After Hugo checked on the machines, the late drivers and Kelvin naturally still had access to it. This was the same with the other soldiers as, after all, they needed to check on their equipment as well.
Anyone could be a suspect, and how could they continue on the mission if they didn’t know when they’ll get stabbed in the back again?
Their team was small, compact, and with every member having an important role in the rescue. Paul was in charge of technical equipment, Liam had a degree in chemistry, and Abu specialized in search and rescue.
Losing another one would be equivalent to losing a leg—no pun intended.
The two men sighed and compartmentalized, knowing it was useless until the soldiers woke up and admitted to anything.
For now, he only took out a rough map from his pocket. Fortunately it wasn’t burned.
The laboratory was huge and expansive. Basically, even below them, there could be a part of the laboratory.
They had to go there by foot now, and considering the number of zombies right outside, it certainly wouldn’t be easy.
It was around this time that the soldiers—all injured in various degrees—woke up one by one.
Immediately, the men gathered around, checking their state.
"We’re so sorry for being useless," said the soldiers.
"We didn’t even help."
Khalifa shook her head in pity for the soldiers. "It’s okay, we can heal you, it’ll just take time."
The men looked touched and teary, and this was especially true for Paul.
Paul only had a leg. He was only a liability, but he was never left. His eyes filled with tears and he started sobbing again.
"How are you?" Khalifa asked very kindly, and Kylo looked similarly concerned. "Don’t worry, I’ll heal you up the best I can."
This just made the man cry harder. "P-Please don’t w-waste anymore…"
"It’s okay, we can just gather crystals." She said, her voice so soothing, making the men fall a little in love.
Khalifa continued to heal them, surrounded by crystals, the glow incredibly beautiful.
This mountain was continuously refilled by her men by going outside in pairs.
It only made the soldiers feel guiltier, making all these supernaturals treat them—making them waste so many crystals while risking their lives outside—was something that gripped their heart.
"That’s…, thank you…" The others said, but Khalifa and the other’s hard work broke one.
This was killing with kindness, so to speak.
Suddenly, one of the men burst to tears, startling everyone.
"I’m sorry, I’m sorry…" Paul sobbed, "Please.. really… stop healing me. I want to die."
Khalifa paused whatever she was doing, and the men gathered around, realizing what this meant.
It was Kylo who stepped forward with a dark face. "Why?"
"They… they have my mother and sister…"
This naturally sent alarm in everyone’s mind, they stared at him. Kylo’s eyes sharpened as he looked at him with cold eyes.
"Who?"
The man gasped as he cried, and Khalifa patted Kylo’s arm to calm him down. She then looked at the sobbing man, her soothing voice easing the man’s emotions.
"I-I’m not sure… they’re definitely soldiers, and I know for sure they have power in the base."
From behind them, Hugo sneered. "Now, now, who would want Kylo—de facto leader of the largest base—dead?" Hugo asked with a bit of annoyance and Kylo couldn’t even talk back, just feeling guilty.
Kaize looked at them. "It seems like I’m the only one who didn’t indirectly cause harm to Khalifa." He paused, "Okay, that guy too," he said, painting at Jacob.
The timing of the commentary was very wrong, but Kaize lived to compare.
Kylo was trying his best not to explode, and some sparks had already appeared around him. With gritted teeth, he looked at Paul—someone he saw as a life-and-death brother.
He apparently thought the same, but in a very different way.
"You realize our brothers died needlessly because of you."
"I’m sorry, I’m sorry."
The man sobbed, continuously crying out "I’m sorry" as if in prayer, as if talking to the souls of his lost brothers.
The others knew there was no talking to him anymore and they sighed, looking at each other.
Khalifa began to focus on the other three who were shocked by the revelation that they almost forgot the pain they were in.
Soon they were healed enough to be able to stand on their own, and they couldn’t help but mumble gratitude every few words. It was very awkward as they could still hear Paul sobbing his heart out, but they managed to utter enough gratitude.
"But our tools."
Everyone paused. Another issue was that all their tools had been destroyed in the explosion.
Khalifa blinked, "I saw a few, these may help."
"EH?"
She stood up and went somewhere, followed by a few men—decided to be Jacob and Hugo this time.
They headed deeper into the building, taking care of the few zombies around. Khalifa stopped when she found a particularly spacious lobby, releasing her items.
The men watched as Khalifa took out several tools with an overall mass larger than her own.
"Wow, you really got everything," Hugo said with a smile. Khalifa looked smug that the two men wanted to kiss her senseless.
However, they still knew this wasn’t the time. The men carried the tools back to the lobby area and they could still hear Paul crying.
"Wow, you killed with kindness."
"Not exactly."
This made the two pause and turn to look at her.
"You know, there’s a component in the brain called the Prefrontal Cortex," she said, "I manipulated him a bit. That part could make people more… honest."
"You’re a genius!!"
"This made him more honest, so he really did feel remorse."
"What use is that now?"
"When will he stop crying?"
At this, Khalifa looked embarrassed. "I… may have overdone it a bit."
