Chapter 16 - Buried to be remembered.
"I heard about the magic fence you built around the village."
"Oh? How could you have possibly heard that?"
"You guys were making a lot of noise; it would be hard not to know that. Oh, and how did you even get the other villagers to work on it? Father could never get them to do anything."
"Just a few things here and there..."
"Hmm..."
Ria lowered the paper to show her face, shooting a judgy glare at him.
She was lying on his lap, so there was no way Jared could hide his face, even if he wanted to.

Locking gazes with her, he uttered,
"Why are you looking at me like I killed your dog or something?"
"My brother has somehow gotten bolder and even more handsome. Hmm... isn't that suspicious?"
Jared sighed.
"Again with the questions. Father died, so I had to lock in. Is that so surprising?"
His response was met with a slight drop in Ria's mood.
"Yeah... that's true..."
While Jared did feel sad about the death of his father, he was still another person at the end of the day. So, for the most part, it was a bit easier for him to handle.
The same couldn't be said about Ria.
The fact their father died and she was not even able to pay him any kind of visit must have been eating her alive.
"Ria."
"Yes," she replied, raising her paper back up to see her drawing.
"Do you want to see Dad's grave?"
His question was straightforward; there was no reason for him to sugarcoat anything.
"Didn't his body get thrown into the river? How do you expect me to do that?"
"...Right, of course you'd think that. The thing is, I buried him not too far from here."
There was silence for a while.
"Whaaaaaaaat?!"
Ria jolted up, throwing her drawing to the side.
Without thinking, she sat on his lap, her legs hugging him as she placed her hands on his cheeks, pulling him closer.
Her thighs gently pressed against his legs, while her flourished silver hair danced behind her.
"Tell me you're joking, right now!"
"I am not."
"You seriously buried Dad's body? How did the rest of the villagers even allow you to do that?"
"Well... I didn't tell them. You know how they can be... they don't support burying corpses," Jared replied, his expression as calm as always.
"Yeah! Because their souls will wander around, and that will attract witches! You dumb brother of mine!"
"Have you ever seen one before?" Jared asked.
"Seen what? A witch?"
"Yes. Everyone seems to be so afraid of them despite never seeing one before. Who's to say they will even have interest in simple northerners like us?"
"Ahhh~ my little brother has gotten even dumber!"
Ria exclaimed, yanking him back and forth while also moving her own body against his.
From what everyone in the north knew, the witches were allies of war, used by different kingdoms to fight back during the times of the golden war.
But after they were done, humans turned on them and burned most of them alive.
Because of this, most witches went into hiding, some even going as far as to kill humans out of revenge.
As such, humans and witches were never seen to be close—enemies of circumstance.
"Could it be you've fallen in love with a witch or something?"
"Why would you even assume that?"
"I did hear that witches are beautiful. So it's not entirely out of the question, oh my poor brother~" Ria covered her mouth, hiding her teasing smile.
"I just said I have never seen a witch before! Geez!" Jared shouted, and then calmed down. "Are you saying you don't want to see Dad then?"
"Will you come with me?"
"Are you scared?"
Ria nodded.
Jared was a bit taken aback by that. It was meant to be a teasing question; he didn't think she would actually be scared.
Even though it seemed like she was back to being normal, there were just some things that most people could never get rid of.
"Honestly, the things I do for you. Fine, let's go."
"I love you, Jared~" Ria hugged him.
"Oww! Too tight! Too tight!!!"
After a while, Jared took Ria to where he had buried his father's body.
If only he had remembered Ria then, he would have taken her along since it wasn't all that far from the building.
The fact he once believed in the northerners' bullshit was in itself angering. Tossing the dead body of your loved one out of fear of some ancient being—it was laughable.
Jared, no, the new Jared didn't buy into that.
His father served the village well—blood, sweat, and dedication. Throwing his body into the water was not how anyone should go.
"This is the place," Jared announced.
Ria halted her steps, the sight in front of her a bit new and hard to understand.
She could see a tombstone dug into the ground, and a drawing of her father, Richard Hunter, on it. It wasn't anything special, but yet, Ria could have sworn as she looked upon the grave, she could feel her father staring back at her.
For some reason, Ria took a deep breath and then spoke,
"Thank you, Jared. At least now I can come see Father when you are not around to give me attention."
"Oh? What is this? You're not going to cry like you always do?"
Ria shot him a glare, to which Jared instantly raised both his arms.
"Teasing your big sister is not funny," she turned her attention back to the stone. "Not when Dad is watching."
"Don't be ridiculous. If you get bored, you can always come see me in the village," said Jared.
"And deal with the rest looking at me like I'm a stranger? I don't think so," Ria replied with a sad smile.
"Back then, we couldn't explain to them because it was simply hard to understand. But with my influence, they should understand what it means. At least until I think of a solution."
"Haha, what are you saying?"
"Let's tell the villagers about the curse."
