Chapter 35: Silver a gallon

Olsen sat down on the couch, behind him, his strongest silent soldier, Orlando.

Since Olsen had shown up, Jared had not said a single word.

Instead, he was studying his surroundings.

During their first meeting, Jared was occupied with making Olsen agree to his games, rather than truly assessing his enemy.

Hence why he never used his god of information blessing on Orlando, who was said to be a five-star just like Lucy.

Considering how rare it was for anyone in the northern region to attain the five-star ranking, it was truly impressive.

From a hundred people, only 20 could turn out to be a five-star rank.

But right now, there was nothing holding him back from doing it.

[You are now using the god of information’s blessing.]

[Character profile:

Name: Orlando

Abilities: Fighter’s instinct, combat specialist, endurance.

Special abilities: Flame manipulation.

Occupation: Olsen’s bodyguard and commander.

Current mood: Calm and protective.]

[The god of loyalty offers his assistance.]

[Orlando’s loyalty: -10%]

A nervous look played on Jared’s face.

’What the hell is -10% supposed to mean?’

Taking a closer look at Orlando, Jared realized he didn’t need the system to tell him he was bad news.

And yet, he couldn’t help but feel Lucy and William were way stronger.

Perhaps it was because he was the one to upgrade them, or maybe it was the fact Orlando had only one special skill when William had like five, Lucy having more.

Either way, Jared wasn’t fully impressed.

"I’m sure you are wondering why I asked to see you rather than razing your village and killing everyone in it for embarrassing me the way you did," Olsen began.

"No, no I wasn’t..."

"You don’t need to worry, I don’t plan on killing you, at least not yet. See, our previous meeting made me realize something, you are special, young chief, you were able to harm Orlando, Orlando doesn’t get harmed. It’s his thing. Somehow, you made him not do his thing. I find that questionable, don’t you?"

’This orange-haired monkey is seriously asking me such a stupid question? I can’t lose my cool now, I’m so close.’

Jared suddenly raised his hand,

"Not to be rude or anything, but I’m quite curious as to why you wanted to see me," he hinted.

Olsen was quiet for a while, probably wondering why Jared cut him off so quickly.

"True. I never told you why I called for you, did I?"

’Another stupid question...I swear to...’

"In a few days, I have some business-related associates coming here for some miracle water. Normally, I would have it in bulk and ready to be sold. But you see, as I said, I’ve taken a liking to your village, which is why I don’t want to kill everyone in it just to get water. So, I thought of an alternative, a way for everyone to be happy..."

’...Say it...’ Jared hid his anticipated smile, his fist clenched while paying full attention to Olsen’s moving mouth.

"A business trade," Olsen said. "Rather than forcefully taking the water from you, what if I promise to buy it instead? A business transaction, that way, everyone is happy, both parties get something to gain."

Kiara found the thought repulsive.

This was Olsen, the man who stole and conquered other villages just to get what he wanted.

Trusting him to keep a deal was like biting yourself despite knowing it will leave a bruise.

She wanted to speak up, warn Jared not to fall for his obvious scheme.

But as she looked to the side to warn him, Kiara’s entire motivation withered as she was met with a dangerous smile on Jared’s face.

That smile you give someone before sending them to their doom.

Or that look you offer up to the teacher when you bribed for cheats and he/she is trying to call you out.

Both of those expressions were etched on Jared’s face.

’Hahah! Hook, line, and sinker!’ Jared rejoiced in his mind. ’Even better than I expected. Well done, Olsen, well done...’

His plan was simple yet a bit of a gamble.

He knew after what happened at the village, Olsen’s ego wouldn’t let him destroy the village completely.

To him, the fact Jared was able to play him and also injure one of his strongest soldiers wasn’t something he wanted to let go.

Instead, he wished to control them, having everything under his rule.

As such, he would come with a proposition to work together, and of course, it was only an excuse to exploit. But Jared already saw it coming a mile away.

Hence why he already had countermeasures in place.

And besides...this was exactly what Jared wanted.

"You want to have business with us? Gee, I don’t know, it sounds a bit like a trap," Jared said, trying to fake his wariness even though the malicious smile was still etched on his face.

Kiara had a blank expression on her face, confused as to what was going on.

"I have no reason to trap you. I am simply opting for peace rather than unwanted deaths. Before you think ahead, let me tell you the deal I have set in place for you."

Olsen changed his sitting position and began...

"For every gallon of water, I will pay you a total of 2 silver eres."

In this world, money was one of the main transactions of any trade; most had already abandoned the need for using trade by barter.

Using money, the official conversion went as follows:

50 silver eres was one bronze eres.

And 50 bronze eres was one gold eres.

As such, the economy didn’t really rely on silver eres anymore; inflation caused its value to decrease so much that the lowest price for goods you could find would be 30 eres upwards, unless you were buying in bulk.

In other words, offering 2 silver eres for a gallon of water was not a fair trade, not by any standard.

Jared suddenly sighed...

"And you were so close too..." he uttered with so much disappointment in his voice.
