Chapter 36: Challenge.

"And you were so close too..."

"Sorry?" Olsen glared.

"Offering 2 silver eres for a gallon of my water is practically theft, don’t you think?" Jared uttered.

"Is it? Think of it this way, how much would you place on the life of your people?"

Jared sighed.

"Again with the threat. Come on, man, do you not have any mercy in you? Even if it’s a little bit, raise the price to at least 30 silver eres."

"Ahahah! No way, I’m being generous making it 2 silver eres. Don’t push your luck."

Jared leaned over, giving Olsen puppy dog eyes.

"The hell? What’s wrong with his face?" Olsen asked with disgust as he looked at Lucy.

"He... He is just thinking about something. My lord makes that face sometimes. Please don’t think about it," Lucy was quick to respond, though she was panicking a bit.

"This is how he thinks? That’s odd..." Olsen wasn’t convinced, but there was no use fighting it.

"I think what my lord is trying to convey here is, 2 silver pieces is way too small. Could you consider raising the price a bit? It will take us over 50 gallons to earn anything worth keeping," Kiara chimed in.

Silence took over for a while...

"Okay then. I’ll raise it to 13 silver eres, but with the addition that for every gallon we buy, you give us three extra."

"What?"

On impulse, Kiara slammed her hand on the table.

Though she was quick to calm down, she still didn’t stop sending jarring shots at Olsen.

"Such a greedy bunch, you’re still not satisfied with my offer? Do you need me to make it even worse? Because I don’t think you understand the situation you are in," said Olsen, his eyes glittering with mischief.

"... this man..." Kiara cursed.

Suddenly...

"Okay fine, I accept your terms..." Jared smiled, his fingers crossed together.

"See? I knew you’d see things my way, quite the wise-"

"But before then...."

[Inventory.]

[You have pulled out a contract.]

Jared placed the paper on the table.

"... Please sign this contract as proof of our agreement."

Olsen looked at the contract on the table.

And then looked at Jared.

Jared looked at the contract.

And then looked back at Olsen, a serious look plastered on his features.

"What is this?" asked Olsen.

"A contract. Are you illiterate?"

"What makes you think I would sign a contract?"

"As a means of agreement."

"There is no law in the north."

"Yes, but there is a council. I would like to have my words straight if they were ever to question me."

The council was something that was established a while back, after the northern region began to regain its strength.

Rulers of powerful and successful lands came together to form the council, a select few of different leaders, who decided what and what should not be allowed in the north.

If laws were broken, they all had a treaty to punish the person involved, based on which side of the north it happened.

Unlike the outer land, the northerners are governed by decisions and opinions. As such, it was still considered a lawless land.

"Hmm..."

Olsen was definitely suspicious, and yet, the innocent face Jared was putting out made him think otherwise.

’This is the first time someone has ever said they wanted to offer me a contract. Is this dude really alright in the head? It’s fine, as long as he agrees to what I want, I’ll indulge him.’

Clearing his throat, Olsen grabbed the contract on the table and began to read it.

---

**Contract of Trade and Partnership**

Between A (the Seller) and B (the Merchant Liaison), the following terms are agreed:

1. **Sales Rights**: A may sell goods to B at any mutually agreed price. B grants A the right to sell additional goods through B’s network, including merchants or other channels.

2. **Profit Sharing**: Profits from all sales shall be divided, with A receiving 80% and B receiving 20% (Non-negotiable).

3. **Merchant Delivery**: B is responsible for providing and coordinating merchants to facilitate sales.

4. **Non-Interference**: B shall not interfere with any trade or goods pursued by A that are unrelated to the initial goods specified in this contract.

Both parties vow to uphold these terms in good faith.

A: Signed___

B: Signed___

— Dead silence.

"Is this some kind of joke?" Olsen tried his best not to yell, but the red knot at the side of his head gave it away.

"What? I’m very sure it’s written in a language you can understand." Jared snatched the contract to have a closer look at it.

"I am no fool. I know damn well what I read, young chief. Having you gain 80% of profit is laughable, not to speak of even allowing you to come close to my customers."

Both Kiara and Lucy remained silent, waiting to see what Jared was going to do.

Lowering the contract, Jared suddenly uttered -

"Okay then. I challenge you."

Lucy almost gasped after hearing that.

"You challenge me?" Olsen chuckled a bit.

"Yes, to a duel. If I win, you have to sign this contract. But if I lose, you get the water you want for free, as many times as you want, without having to pay a dime."

Hearing the offer Jared was making, Lucy couldn’t help but feel a bit tense.

While she knew Jared was impressive when it came to planning and literally any other stuff, fighting wasn’t one of his strong suits.

In fact, she had never seen him battle anyone.

"Lord Jared, what are you doing?" Kiara whispered while grabbing his arm. "This man isn’t normal. No one has been able to defeat him, and no one knows his rank either. I know I shouldn’t be questioning you, but reconsider this time."

Jared turned a deaf ear to her pleas.

"What do you say? A battle between leaders. Or are you worried you’ll lose?"

Olsen knew what Jared was doing. It was the same thing he did during their first meeting: trying to bait him into accepting a duel he knew he could win.

And yet...

"You cocky bastard..." Olsen clenched his fist, his eyes widened in rage. "Challenging me will be the last thing you do."

Jared smiled.

[The god of combat is currently observing you.]
