Chapter 41: Scavengers

One by one, the dangerous-looking men leaped down from the carriage.

Holding blades and other weapons, they looked no different from the scavengers Kiara called them.

Scavengers were known to ambush traveling merchants and rob them of their goods, sometimes even daring to steal from villagers.

Even if you managed to catch a single one, they have been scattered all around the north, that it is almost impossible to rid them all.

They were the growing parasite in the north that nobody cared about.

"Asshole, did you not hear what I said? Walk away from the buffaloes; my boss has taken a liking to them."

One of them spoke, pointing a short blade at the villagers.

And while the villagers were afraid, they didn’t stand down, not even for a second.

"This belongs to our village; please go find something else to hunt," replied a villager, while literally shaking in fear.

"What the hell did you say?" Another scavenger moved closer.

"Check these fools out, hahah, trying to act all tough cause you caught a couple of buffaloes? Don’t make me laugh."

Soon, the three villagers had been surrounded by over 10 scavengers, with a few more still standing close to the wagon.

"Oi! Hand over the hunts... I’m running out of patience..."

"I’m sorry, I can’t..."

Instantly, there was a slice to the villager’s arm, blood dripping down.

"Argh!" The man grunted in pain before falling on the pile of dead buffaloes, trying to hold down his screams.

"Hahah! Just a scratch and you’re screaming? Weaklings everywhere these days, huh? Come, let’s do the same to his friends; I’m sure they wouldn’t want to betray their fellow hunter..."

The remaining two villagers didn’t seem so scared for some reason. A sudden change in their mood. And the scavengers could tell.

"Huh? Is there..."

Turning around, one of them saw Lucy standing behind them, her body leaking with energy while lightning danced around her.

"Wow! Check out this beauty... Damn, I didn’t know girls like these existed in this side of the north. Well, hello there, beautiful, what’s your name?"

A scavenger said as he walked towards her, a smile on his face, a devilish smile.

Lucy didn’t give any response.

In fact, her attention wasn’t on him at all, instead, on the villager who had gotten injured.

"Is he okay?"

She asked, while moving towards them, completely ignoring the scavenger that took his time to get closer.

Frozen in shock and anger, the scavenger could only stand there, while his colleagues laughed at him for being ignored.

Reaching their side, Lucy watched as they began to tie the man’s arm with a cloth.

The sight itself angered her.

"Oi! Who the hell do you think you are, ignoring me like that? Screw your beauty; now I just want to kill you! Get your as-"

Not a single word more.

And Lucy had gotten to his front with a single step, her blade perfectly aimed at his Adam’s apple.

Everyone who witnessed was shocked; they could have sworn they didn’t see her move.

Did she teleport?

If that was the case, is she higher than a five-star?

Gulp!

The man pulled his head back a bit, the burns from the blade already digging into his skin.

"How am I to explain to Lord Jared that on my watch, one of his people got attacked by lowlives?" whispered Lucy.

"Jared? Who the hell is that?..."

Lucy pulled the blade even closer, blood trickling down from his neck all the way to the blade and immediately drying up.

"Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t kill you here, right now?" Her voice laced with venom.

The rest noticed the lightning dancing around her and immediately knew she was a five-star.

"You don’t want to kill a scavenger; the rest will come for you. All the different factions...t-think about it?"

Lucy didn’t care.

In that moment, she was ready to slice his head off. To the naked eye, she was probably just angered at the fact they injured her people.

But deep down it was something different; her hatred for criminals like the scavengers was second to none.

Just when the thought of shoving the blade even deeper hit Lucy, she felt someone rest their hand on her shoulder.

And then...

Baam!

A slap to the face.

The attack sent Lucy flying to the side, but she quickly regained her balance.

Luckily, Lucy was able to use her lightning to protect her face from getting damaged.

"Honestly... you idiots had one job, and somehow you can’t even do that. So? Who’s the bitch?"

The leader of the group, a man who wore tattered trousers without any shirt to hide the tattoos on his body.

He was huge, muscular, the type of man to grab someone and never let go until they were dead.

Seeing him seemed to have raised all their morale, as seen with how they began to surround him with hopeful looks.

"Boss! You didn’t need to step off the wagon; we were going to handle this..." said the man whose neck was literally bleeding.

"Really now? Seemed to me like the girl was so close to bullying you." The boss grabbed the man by the shirt and tugged him close, "Are you trying to make my faction look bad?"

The man shook his head frantically.

"Good. Quit acting like a weak princess, or I’ll be the one to kill you myself."

Now, the boss turned his attention to Lucy.

"Sigh! Why are you giving my boys so much trouble? Such a pretty girl like you shouldn’t be acting like a nuisance."

Lucy also sighed.

"A pest from your group injured one of my friends. And as it is now, my lord won’t be happy about that. As such, I’d like you to write a letter apologizing as their leader. That shouldn’t be too hard; I have paper and ink here..." She replied, not a single stutter.

At first, the boss was confused. Was she stupid to not realize she was being outnumbered? Or is the fact she’s a five-star giving her all this confidence? Which would be very much valid.

He decided to play along.

"And who is this lord of yours?"

"Lord Jared Hunter. The man who tamed the gods to do his bidding."
